If there are at least two of you in a game and you don't want to risk it disappearing, one of you at a time can exit and then rejoin to get your stuff back.

Did you play a named by you game? Even if not so, you should have marked the game name set by the server before heading to

Uber Tristram, and it would be Game########## (#... is a 10-digit number visible as game password for the namesake game name) under party tab. This way if someone willing to help you quickly logged into the game, they would have had a chance to retrieve a new shiny hellfire large charm for you, while your character corpses lying there and watching the process.

You don't need two people in a game to save and exit and rejoin. For Ubers it's best to make a password game, and once the game has been running for a few minutes you can quit and save and then rejoin even if you're a solo player. After I've collected all uber organs I will sometimes quit and join with a another of my builds to cleanup areas I missed. Try it, go make a password protected game in lobby, play for a few minutes, quit and save and then rejoin.
