I mean, even before battle.net you could have played D2 offline running from your own PC (as a server). I don't see why would that be changed. Even now, if you turn off (or you lose) your internet and can't log-in into battle.net you can still run game and play offline perfectly fine since it's built on top of old engine.
P.S. Well, the only difference in this new D2R I don't think there's an option to play via LAN. :/
