So I have tons of jewels and just got a decent ethereal Death Mask with 3 sockets.
So i was thinking about my merc, what if I added jewels so he would get lets say 40-50ED added by the helmet? Or lets say 3 jewels of + to ether or min or max damage.
Is it worth it at all?
And if it is, whats best of the 2 options, depending when this is added to the math for damage.
So lets say either +50Ed, or maybe a total of +20 to min and 20 to max damage in the helmet. Just to use some numbers. Or even all to max, who knows.

Sry to say, but what you suggest won't improve your Merc's performance that much. Only 3 jewels usecase i can imagine is Jeweler's Tiara/ Coronet/ Diadem of the leech (magical 3os lifeleech helmet) with 3* 15ias/40ed jewels. And such thing is expensive af, speaking of way more then 50 jahs
If youre on ladder, better use your Giant Conch helmet for Cure. Or get Tal Rasha's Horadric Crest, as this is better on merc than any normal socketed+jewels item i can imagine
Or just socket 3* 15% Increased attack speed. Reaching IAS breakpoints has much more effect on merc then Max/min dmg or ED

The best options for this base is Bulwark and Cure. But be careful, both runewords are ladder only. Other options are the already known Tal Rasha's Horadric Crest, Andariel's Visage with a Ral or 15% IAS with 20+ FR and Vampire Gaze.
Another option, if you don't use curses, is Delirium (for the Confuse trigger)

True, but only worth in act 1 mercenary. An act 2 merc will be every time a Bone Fetish. My Chain Lightning Sorceress has an Act 2 Merc with Infinity, Delirium, and Gloom.
Since I do most of the killing, he rarely transforms into a Bone Fetish
His sporadic curse triggers help me against ranged enemies
(as I'm trying to reach 99 I prefer him to contribute to my defense/crowd control)

short answer, dont use jewel, dont use Mask/ Death Mask base at all. even if it perfect all.

At first, you need to understand your base, Eth Death Mask. / Mask for normal.
It is lv req 25. it is best equipment for lv 25, with low str requirement. But you only able to choose mid level jewel/ runes. Around 14-x min damage.
It will be very strong if you plan to play lv 25-35 from normal a5-nightmare a4. After nm a4, even if you use 20, it is not enough. That is longest road this kind of jewel can reach with good performance.
However, most people(even me) dont like to play lv 25 like that. It is something like 2hr lv 25->lv 60 with help of Ist.
If you plan to use Death Mask in end game, it is no. You sholdnt use it.
Current middle base, only has Grand Crown and circle series work. Other middle base is dead, no value.
Mask series, Demonhead and Mask has good use case. Mask -> low lv poison x 3 but it is not valid for general Wealth people.
Mask peak value have some use case .

Few weeks ago, my A2 merc almost took out Diablo on his own in seconds just by every attack being a crushing blow ( i think he has 80 or 90% CB, along with decent IAS ). Combined with maxed all hydras from my sorc being right on top of him on spawn, nearly instakill on big D.
