With Raven Frost, how much cold Resist do you need to have an equivalent to 75 cr?

Description

Hi

As
Raven Frost
have 20% cold absorb,
how much cold Resist do you need to have an equivalent to 75 cr?

In a simple calculation I ended up with 59 cr
59 cr means you take 41% of the damage, reduced to 32.8% by the cold absorb, and you gain 8.2% of the damage in life too ->
you take in practice just 24.6% of the damage (32.8%-8.2%)

Is this correct?

Yes :)

20% cold absorb reduces the damage that remains after res has been applied by a further 40%.

So, for it to be equivalent to having 75% res with 0% absorb, you take the damage that should remain (25%), divide that by 0.6 (100% minus the 40% negated by the 20% absorb), and finally subtract the result of that from 100%.

100% - (25% / 0.6) = 58.333....%

So you need to have 58.333...% res with a
Raven Frost
for it to be equivalent to 75% res without any absorb %. Rounded up to 59% since fractional resists don't exist.

Or in more general terms:

100 - ((100 - X) / (1 - (Y / 50)))

where
X is the target res you want it to be equivalent to (75 in this case)
Y is your absorb % (20 in this case)

EDIT: This is of course ignoring any other damage reducing effects like flat/integer absorb, magic damage reduced by, etc. Just a simplified look at res and absorb % in a vacuum.

Yes, it is correct.

Damage calculation is made in the following order:

1 For elemental damage, calculate resistance first.
2 Remove percentage absorption, if any.
3 Remove hit point absorption, if any.
4 Add healing, up to maximum hit points.

So, for example, and to make calculations simpler, lets assume 400 damage.

If you have 75% res, it means you only get 100 damage points.

Same scenario, but with 59% res and 20% absorb:

Step 1 - 400-(400 * (1-0.59)) = 164 | You get 41% of the damage, 164 points
Step 2 - 164 - (164 * (0.2)) = 131.2 | From the remaining 164 points, you remove the 20% absorb (164*0.2 = 32.8), so you are are left with 131 point of damage
Step 3 - In this case, doesn't matter
Step 4 - 131.2 - 32.8 = 94.4 | You add back the 32.8 poits back to your health, that I've represented as reducing damage, but in reality, is added back to your life pool (might be relevant if you are on low life)

This is not a precise value, as I did not take into account integer rounding, but is close enought.
In this scenario, 58 res would be closer to 75res with no absorb. With 58 res you would get 100.8 damage.

This is super cool info! If I wear 2
Raven
Frosts, does it reduce the needed cold res further? I have to assume yes. I might be able to rework some of my gear with this knowledge.

Yep, you will have 40% cold absorb

using the calculation above
100 - ((100 - X) / (1 - (Y / 50)))
100 - ((100 - 75) / (1 - (40 / 50))) = -25% 🤔🤔

So... you need to have -25% resist (a negative resistance) to have a "practical" 75% resist with 40% absorb 😛

Make sense, as with 0 cold resist you will take only 20% of the damage (equivalent to 80% resist, which is already higher than 75%) 😉

Wait....so with one
Raven Frost
I would need 59% CR to simulate actually having 75% CR, but with 2
Raven
Frosts, I can have 0% CR or less and it will still be as effective? Math is confusing, I would have thought it would just maybe double the effect, reducing the required cold res from 59% down another 16% or so to 43%.

Yep. It is right.

And that's why the game caps absorb at 40% 😉
With 50% absorb you would be in practice immune to that element.

Yes, as justinman114 and fredkid have noticed, with absorb % each additional 1% is more effective than the last in terms of how much res it will correspond to. So rather than diminishing returns, there's increasing returns. It's just how it works, mathematically.

When you have 0% absorb, adding another 1% it will be equivalent to 0.51% res.
When you have 10% absorb, adding another 1% would be equivalent to 0.80% res.
When you have 20% absorb, adding another 1% would be equivalent to 1.44% res.
When you have 25% absorb, adding another 1% would be equivalent to 2.08% res.
When you have 30% absorb, adding another 1% would be equivalent to 3.29% res.
When you have 35% absorb, adding another 1% would be equivalent to 5.95% res.
When you have 40% absorb, adding another 1% would be equivalent to 13.89% res (if it wasn't capped at 40%).
