Description

Hello. I played the original D2 like 20 years ago, and recently decided I had to get Resurrected mostly for nostalgia, and I'm having a fun time with it.
So I'm not a total noob, but I'm afraid this is going to be a bit of a noob question.

How do people typically farm higher level runes? Higher than Hell Countess that is.
I ask this because when browsing the market, I was a little shocked at how favourably seemingly easy-to-find
Perfect Gems
or keys exchange with runes I've never seen even once. This suggests there must be a more systematic way to acquire them than just....going to high level areas and hoping for the best.

I've finished Hell on one char and have a few others at reasonable levels, and so far the highest I've gotten was a
Gul
from
The Hellforge
quest. Other than that, I've never seen anything over
Mal
, and even the handful before that seem exceptionally rare.

So where do they all come from?

Hello and welcome 🙂 The simple quick answer is: "Bots"

I play this game now for ca. 1,5 years (on average I suppose ca. 1h per day in the evenings). I have found so far 5
Jah
, 3
Ber
, 3
Cham
and even 1
Zod
and it seems this is very lucky 😉 (mostly in
Terror
Zones and
Chaos Sanctuary
).

After a 20 year break from D2 I started playing D2R in 2024 with my sons (9 and 10 years old)
Time Zone: UTC/GMT +1/+2 (Germany)
Online workdays: casually from 07:00-09:00 pm
Online weekends: casually midday to evening

it was bot in LoD .
In normal way, it produce 2
Jah
worth product every day.

In rotw, there are different way, previously there is corpse hook method that can produce around 1
Jah
worth product every 3 hour in my estimation.
however for easy management, it produce 1
Jah
worth thing every 8 hour, slightly better than regular bot...

it isnt that fun. but consider later days you can pick whatever you want in very easy way....

Please be aware, all my trade is in non ladder d2r. Not warlock.

Main be it's bots. Will not argue about that.
But IMO it is because at some point of the game you already made good runewords and your killing speed increases. Then you start getting high runes more often. And at that very point you need gems to craft or reroll charms +runes for that in huge quantities. You also getting good gear worth selling more often.

If your killing speed on Hell is low due to bad gear my advice is to farm Nightmare
Terror
zones. More kills => more chances to get runes above that
Gul
you have.
Also if you are playing online trade that
Gul
for something that will improve your killing speed right now instead of waiting for other runes to combine it with.

Hi and welcome back to Sanctuary :)

As everyone said, bots pull the prices down. There are also websites that sell for real money, people who have amassed vast hoards of runes through the years on non ladder (Battle.net never shut down and you could transfer your old characters to D2R), cross realm trading (Asia/US/Europe). But don't let this discourage you, many players don't use any of these (I think). Gems are needed in high quantities for crafting and rerolling by rich players, so they buy them in bulk at somewhat expansive prices.

For getting runes legit, there is no other way than good old farming. The Council in A3 is known to be not too bad for that, the Cows or any zone with good trash mob density. Or maybe you can count the A4 forge quest as an alternative, which in Hell can give you up to
Gul
(IIRC). Some people will rush you through the game in exchange for your forge quest, or they will make many new chars and rush them with multiple windows of the game open or in a group, in order to farm this quest.

Personally since D2R dropped I have found several Bers, one or two Jahs, quite enough
Vex
and Ohms, not many
Lo
(one or two) and never ever
Cham
and
Zod
.
