That claim is simply not accurate.
As already noted earlier in the topic, the "get credit for what others are doing" only goes for sets and uniques, not RWs.

Every new game I make or join I have to open the chronicle, go to rewards & click the icon to activate the golden portal.
Once activated it will stay on as long as I stay in that game.
