Alternatively hold an Edge runeword yourself against a boss to give the team
Thorns
all good options. have you tried them yourself or this is just theory?
I will direct you to this video on the topic. It's about a summon necro but the same concept applies still.

Hey Rickus! Funny I just started my own Bone necro this week!

If I may recommend something from a fellow ssf offline guy: only start to worry about your Mf when your in the late game. When your leveling you generally want to keep it as efficient /fast as possibly. The reason is that you’ll always be better Mfing in higher level areas anyways, especially when your character is also a high level and can clear super fast.

A few months ago I tried poison necro, I maxed out the skills from equipment , synergies and got my run/walk speed up really high. Unfortunately there was one thing I was missing: deaths web. That one item takes a poison necro to the next level. Without it, even with all the other “stuff” you (or at least I) will likely end up being like “meh”

The only problem is how rare deaths web is… like damn, for us ssf guys it might as well not exist. I can’t do 50 pindle runs in a row without wanting to give us the game completely, less the like 20k runs needed.

Right now on my ssf journey I’m waiting on deaths web, deaths fathom, griffons eye, and a
Cham
or
Zod
would be nice too, and I bet they aren’t coming soon…

Two reasons:
1) the return percent on
Iron Maiden
is much lower than
Thorns
unless you're investing serious points into it. Having the merc provide or an Edge runeword is an easy way to get high
Thorns
return %.

2) the WHOLE reason
Thorns
with a necro is good is because
Amplify Damage
over doubles the damage returned by
Thorns
.

let's assume the level of your
Thorns
and
Iron Maiden
both return 700%
Diablo does 235 physical damage and has 45% physical resistance.

With
Iron Maiden
it's 235x4x(1+700%)=7520 returned damage. After resists (45%) Diablo takes 4136 damage.
With
Amplify Damage
its 235x4x(1+700%)=7520 returned damage. Which his adjusted -55% resists the damage becomes 11656 damage.

Amplify Damage
is over doubling the amount of damage Diablo takes. With his 112812 life on P1.
Iron Maiden
: he will kill himself in 113812/4136=27.5 hits
Amplify Damage
: he will kill himself in 113812/11656=9.7 hits

yeah i get it, but that's my playstyle, also it has been very beneficial so far. yes it's slower, and also sometimes less fun, but i did find lots of goodies. you won't believe how many good items there are actually on normal and high. just check the qlvl, the ratio for them to drop in hell is actually much lower. soj is one great example.

I thought i could control it too, but i just go with the items i get, and if i'm lucky, i'm lucky. if not, i go with whatever is overpowering for the appropriate char/skill.

the only thing i do farm, is the uber keys.
and also, i usually just go with char progression throughout the game.

fun to run around exploding stuff and spreading poison..its a good char actually with strategic gameplay i like. i should proabbly lower my players to 5-4...but i'm a stubborn old fool.

goodluck, and may the RNG god be with you.

good math.
I would never go into these lengths, but i will remember this from now. why not put Edge on the merc though? better survivability for other runewords?
also the close radius is the merc when using clayG.

goodluck, and may the RNG god be with you.
