D2R UPDATE: Since patch 2.5, IG spawned from items is persistent across games.

An Iron Golem spawned from an item is not the same as one created by a Necromancer: it is not retained between game sessions, and it will expire if the item is removed.

The rarest amulet in the game, also now iron golems persist between games for non-necros as long as you’re wearing either this or an Oath. The game checks if you have Iron Golem charges on equipped items when you load up your game, if so your Iron Golem with regenerate from your last game at the current skill Charge level. You could summon it with an Oath (level 17) then put on a Metalgrid, swap out a new weapon and next time you log in your Iron Golem with be a level 21 version.

As a necro, you won't lose you Iron Golem after respec if you have Metalgrid (with charges) in your amulet slot.

The odds of a unique amulet being Metalgrid:
Qlvl 84 or less: Cannot drop
Qlvl 85 or more: 2/75

I have to use Iron Golem from this amulet for my Fire Warlock because I cannot get Conviction Bind Demon anymore and I use Insight polearm to make my Iron Golem

Considering how dirt cheap Insight it is, I will call it anew anyway if it died

Probably one of the most overlooked amulets in the end game.

Physical builds: With its massive attack rate and defence bonuses, one wonders why physical builds don’t make more use of this.

Resistances: On a good (not even perfect roll), this item can surpass a perfect Mara’s Kaleidoscope in all res bonuses granting up to 35 (vs30).

Summons: And there’s more. The power that draws some to the metal grid is that it is quite possibly only one of two items (the other being Oath) that allows non-Necros to summon an Iron Golem. Note although the uses will be different - muggles (non-Necros) will not have the synergies so even at level 22 Iron Golem, it will not quite have 1,000 health, so do not use as a tank.. BUT… as it takes on many of the properties of its items, the golem can be used as extra aura bearer. If you wanted to Sacrifice an Insight, you’ll have a Meditation aura golem… Sacrifice Infinity to get a Conviction aura golem. That will be addition to any auras you are running on your person or off your merc.

Who needs +2 skills on an amulet when you have all of the above?

Did I mention the Iron Maiden curse too?

Repair Costs. Tried and Tested. Warning: Arithemetic heavy...

The 1st Charge of Iron Maiden will cost 5806 Gold to repair. For each additional Charge, add 4880. So repairing a full 20 charges will cost you 5806+(19x(4880)) = 98,526 in Gold.

For Iron Golem, the 1st Charge will cost you either 24,692 (if you are repairing alongside Iron Maiden charges) OR 25,618 Gold (if you are just repairing Iron Golem). 2nd and all subsequent charges are 24692 / 24693 per Charge. So a full recharge of Iron Golem (if repairing alongside Iron Maiden) will cost (11x(24692))+4 = 271,616.

The grand total of repairing a fully depleted Metal Grid is 370,142 Gold.

Good News: Gold is an unlimited Resource. 370k would be around 11x capped Items e.g. Elite Armors each worth 35,000 Gold.

Bad News: You know the Gold saving recharge formulas for armors and weapons? An amulet is neither, so there is no recipe to recharge it.

Still, if you limit your use to the Iron Golem, this should keep costs to circa 270,000 Gold for a full cycle of charges. Add 30% discount (15% from Gheeds, and 15% from Edge), and you'll have a bargain recharge price of around 189,000 Gold.
