D2R UPDATE: Since patch 2.5, IG spawned from items is persistent across games.
An Iron Golem spawned from an item is not the same as one created by a Necromancer: it is not retained between game sessions, and it will expire if the item is removed.

The rarest amulet in the game, also now iron golems persist between games for non-necros as long as you’re wearing either this or an Oath. The game checks if you have Iron Golem charges on equipped items when you load up your game, if so your Iron Golem with regenerate from your last game at the current skill Charge level. You could summon it with an Oath (level 17) then put on a Metalgrid, swap out a new weapon and next time you log in your Iron Golem with be a level 21 version.
As a necro, you won't lose you Iron Golem after respec if you have Metalgrid (with charges) in your amulet slot.
