Description
A while back, two good friends that I have played through every Diablo with, from the original, through Diablo 4 decided to come back to D2 based on the Resurrected version, and especially the new expansion. Wen all created a couple characters and started building and levelling. About a week ago, another longtime Diablo friend, who has been playing D2 the last couple years had a bow that he wanted to give me for my fledgling bowazon to help her as she worked through the early content. He also had a couple items that would help our other two friends, We went to meet in a game and kept having issues. He then identified that the bowazon, and barbarian that I had made, as well as the warlock and amazon that our other friends had made were not actual "expansion" characters.
We were mystified because on the character creation screen, we had all created our characters without changing anything related to that, as there was a box, to the right that said "expansion". He explained that you actually had the click on the box, and choose the option that listed the actual name of the expansion to create an expansion character. He also said that it wasnt abig deal,w e could simply convert them, though he didnt explain exactly how. Then we noticed the two buttons at the bottom right of the character screen. They were meant to convert your chahracter, but when we tried, nothing happened at all.
I was just abut to post here when I went to create a mule character earlier today, and left the "expansion" box alone, since, at least initially, my friends and I would be using it with our current characters. Today, even though I created (and later deleted three characters) with it set that way, they all turned out to be "expansion" characters as indicated by the X at the top right. I'm now completely lost. What is going on???

D2:R currently offers either 2 or 3 game versions, depending on whether or not you own Reign of the Warlock:
- Classic
- Expansion (aka LoD)
- Reign of the Warlock (aka RotW)
You can select any of those 3 (or 2 if you don't have RotW) during character creation via the dropdown at the bottom right. It should default to the latest available though, meaning RotW if you have that or Expansion if not.
Classic is the equivalent of the original D2 back in the day, without the old Lord of Destruction expansion.
Expansion is the equivalent of the original D2 with the Lord of Destruction expansion (hence "Expansion").
And Reign of the Warlock is the latest version that Blizz just released a week or so ago.
Both, Classic and the LoD expansion are part of the core D2:R game. Only RotW is a separate purchase.
Classic is the earliest version here, RotW the latest. If you have a character in any earlier version, that character can be converted to the next later one (all the way through) but not from later ones back to earlier versions. Such a "not the latest version" character will have a corresponding icon on the top right of the name tag in your character selection screen. To convert them, select the character and hit the little double-arrow convert icon on the bottom right (below "Create New").
Classic characters are marked by a blue banner with a white II on it. Expansion characters are marked by a brown banner with a lighter brown X on it. Reign of the Warlock characters do not get any such icon.
Characters of one game version can only join games with other characters of the same game version.
Keep in mind that in addition to the above, you also have ladder and non-ladder as game modes independent of the game version. And on top of that, you also have hardcore and softcore as modes independent of the other selections. Each of those game modes is also selected as desired during character creation. For those, you can't manually convert from one to the other although ladder will automatically convert itself to non-ladder at the end of a ladder season. For characters to be able to play together, they need to not only be in the same game version (see above) but also in the same game mode so all 3 need to match, such as e.g. "RotW, ladder, softcore".
And on top of all that, cross-play is limited by system type. PC players can't join console players and so on. PC Steam and PC non-Steam (so Battle.Net app) can theoretically play together but to do so, you currently need to make sure that all are logged into the same region as cross-region joining from non-steam to steam is bugged.

Chris Wilson recently posted a video on YouTube explaining how clever it was for Blizz to make RotW separate from expansion. It essentially gives Blizz the latitude to fundamentally change aspects of LoD version without removing the experience entirely from the player base. He referred to Classic and Expansion versions as 'museum' pieces.
Much as I agree with the approach, they really should've renamed "expansion" to "Lord of Destruction" in the char creator and such though to avoid confusing people, now that there's more than one expansion.ghostpos wrote: 1 day agoChris Wilson recently posted a video on YouTube explaining how clever it was for Blizz to make RotW separate from expansion. Totally agree @Schnorki it's become rather complicated and didn't need to be lol.

So, my important question is how do my friends and I convert our characters that we have put all this time into developing to become "expansion" characters playable there? The buttons at the bottom of the character screen offer that, but are not working.Schnorki wrote: 1 day agoMuch as I agree with the approach, they really should've renamed "expansion" to "Lord of Destruction" in the char creator and such though to avoid confusing people, now that there's more than one expansion.ghostpos wrote: 1 day agoChris Wilson recently posted a video on YouTube explaining how clever it was for Blizz to make RotW separate from expansion. And to make it even more complicated. Some of us use LOD to refer to "not D2R LOD". For me, "Classic" refers to D2 (not D2R) without the LOD expansion. And to be even more of a purist, I would limit that to 1.08 at the latest, maybe 1.09.Schnorki wrote: 1 day agoMuch as I agree with the approach, they really should've renamed "expansion" to "Lord of Destruction" in the char creator and such though to avoid confusing people, now that there's more than one expansion.ghostpos wrote: 1 day agoChris Wilson recently posted a video on YouTube explaining how clever it was for Blizz to make RotW separate from expansion. D2R "Classic" is still a fundamentally altered game from the "Classic" released 20+ years ago and played without any LOD or post 1.08 patches.

I went ahead and created some example characters to illustrate for easier explaining.
Do you own Reign of the Warlock?
If yes, then on your character selection screen, your characters should look something like this:
Note the icon on the top right corner of each character. The top one (blue icon) is a Classic character. The middle one (brown icon) is an Expansion character. And the bottom one (no icon) is a Reign of the Warlock character.
So look at those to first figure out what your character's game version actually is.
Do note that you might see additional icons in case of a ladder character (green icon with a brown ladder on it) or a hardcore character (red icon with a brown skull). Those modes are independent of the actual game version however. Although those game modes, too do need to match up in order to play with your friends.
If your character is a Reign of the Warlock character, you cannot convert it to anything as RotW is the latest version and you cannot convert backwards.
If your character is an Expansion character, you can convert it to RotW but not to Classic.
If your character is a Classic character, you can convert it to Expansion and then after that you can convert it again to go from Expansion to Reign of the Warlock.
The game modes (hardcore/softcore and ladder/non-ladder) cannot be manually converted between. The only conversion happening there is that ladder characters automatically convert to non-ladder at the end of a ladder season.
In order to convert a character, select the character you wish to convert and then hit the convert button on the bottom right of your character screen (highlighted in red below):
After hitting that button, you'll get a popup asking you if you're sure. Select yes on that popup and that's it.
You should now notice that the character you converted moved to the top of your character list (if it wasn't already) and that the icon at the top right has changed or disappeared as applicable to match the new game version.
That's all there is to it for the RotW scenario.
If you do not own RotW then the general approach stays the same with the caveat simply being that you cannot make, convert to or play RotW characters but are left with only Classic and Expansion.

You and your friends who most recently started playing D2:R created characters that are RotW characters, probably (definitely if one of them is a Warlock, as mentioned!).
Your other friend who has been playing D2:R for a while probably hasn't even upgraded to RotW yet, so his characters are all "Expansion". If he doesn't have RotW he cannot convert his characters to RotW for obvious reasons. And his Expansion (non-RotW) charaters cannot meet up in-game with your RotW characters.
If he wants to give you some items, you will need to create a temporary Expansion character, meet up in-game to receive whatever items he wants to give you, then convert the Expansion character to RotW (make sure to keep the items you got in personal stash or inventory, not shared stash!). After that, you can enter a new game with the new RotW character and put the item into the shared stash, and voilá, you can grab it from the shared stash with your usual RotW character.
It's not possible for you to give items back to him as you cannot convert backwards from RotW to Expansion, as Schnorki explained.

Thanks VERY much, for taking the time to explain all of this, its immensely appreciated. Let me explain some basic first, and then a couple questions. My friends and I all purchased the Diablo 2 Resurrected Infernal Edition, so we have the expansion.
Our characters as they appear on the character screen have nothing appearing in the top right corner, despite having been created with "expansion" appearing on the creation page. Based on your information, having nothing appearing in the top right corner would indicate that the characters we have been ARE expansion characters? Is that why clicking on the Conversion buttons does nothing, is that due to the fact they are already expansion characters?
As of just yesterday, the two mule characters that I created DO have the yellow/brown X in the top right corner and cannot join any of the games we create. Why?
This means you have the Reign of the Warlock DLC. "Expansion" refers to Lord of Destruction, the expansion to the original D2 (and which was always included in D2:R).
The characters that you created at first, the ones that don't have a symbol, are not Expansion characters, they are Reign of the Warlock characters. "Expansion" refers to Lord of Destruction, the original expansion, not RotW.
When you create a new character in the Infernal Edition you have the following dropdown selection in the bottom right corner:
Default is "Reign of the Warlock", the new DLC.
"Expansion", again, refers Lord of the Destruction.
The lack of symbol on the character means they are not an Expansion characters, they are RotW characters. RotW characters and Expansion characters cannot play together. An Expansion character can be converted to RotW, but not the other way around.
The D2:R eras are as follows in order of progression:
Classic > Expansion > Reign of the Warlock
You can only convert forward, not backward.
Lastly, Infernal Edition is just a bundle that includes the base D2:R game (which includes the LoD Expansion) and the new D2:R DLC Reign of the Warlock.

OP
Thanks again for trying to clarify this for me. However, when we created out characters the day after the release of the Infernal Edition, our character creation screen did not show "Reign Of The Warlock" as the default. That window said "expansion". But, to be clear, since we have no symbols on the upper right for our characters, they are still RotW characters'? Also, what do we do to access the RotW expansion content? And thanks, very much, again.
If you have no Icon in the upper right corner, then yes, you have a RotW Char. When you have a RotW Char and make a game you are automatically accessing the RotW content because you can only play on the "RotW Realm" (Expansion Chars, on the other hand, can only play on the "Expansion Realm" and therefore not access the new content). Hope this helpsSlapshot wrote: 8 hours agoThanks again for trying to clarify this for me.
