I like very powerful builds, but I need to feel like what I do actually matters.

I like powerful builds that can easily die, though, if I'm not paying attention.

I like balanced builds; I don't die in one hit, but I don't kill with a single click either.

I like having an average or weak build. I could die at any moment, and I'm not even very strong.

In the movie (https://www.imdb.com/video/vi126484761/ ... t_ov_ov_vi) they have to drive the bus with a certain speed and if that drops the bus will explode. Analogy with the movie is that if you're an Assassin with charges up you have to be in constant move looking for new targets. If you stop for more than 15 seconds your charges vanishes and you have to start over building them.

I ll never understand why people choose online over offline mode. Or more specific, why they choose to ruin the entire itemisation and game for themselfs by trading. In offline mode you can play for years and years and still have something to play for. Plus the actual gameplay and loot is much more satisfying due to playercountsettings.

I do understand this. It hurts to go back. But...

This is part of why the end game feels amazing. A LOT of the progression of D2 is speed-based. You feel your character's power growing because casting gets faster, because walking gets faster, and eventually you even Teleport. The whole game just speeds up from beginning to end, and that speed is part of what makes the whole thing feel amazing and makes you feel powerful in the process.

Without the slow speed and the stamina in the early game, you don't have the contrast. With that realization, I actually love it.

Offline mode is awesome. But trading is a MASSIVE and very cool element of the game. It brings an entire dimension to the game. It enables you to obtain items that are practically impossible to obtain offline. It's also just fun to play with other people, especially if you know them. Sometimes it sucks to play with other people, but we're talking about pros not cons at the moment. Online mode is fantastic. D2R has such a cool trading element to it, and the itemization is even richer when you can pool from thousands or even millions of players over decades. I love it.

Offline mode is also fantastic. It's so great to control player count, to really gear for P8 and have that be an obtainable game every time, and to require the player themselves to find or craft literally everything they have. I love it.

D2 is just a great game, and it's made even more great by the fact that you can experience the entire thing so differently. This game would be like literally half of what it is without one or the other.

I used to play only offline whole life but I decided that I dont have enough spare time to fully enjoy some good builds, but I see your point.

I ve stopped playing most games when i felt like i become invincible. For me its not enough to execute the build up power in the end. I need something to play for in endgame. With dozens of Jahs in my pocket from trading, i would loose the motivation to play the game fast i guess. I would wield all crazy costly Runewords like Last Wish for some weeks and then game over.

You can easily "simulate" trading and just replace a Shako with an Ist if you like. So you get that trading experience without the Hustle of putting things up for auction and dealing with other people.
So the only reason to play online is to actually play with other people.

I'm the same. It's still fun for a bit when you're fully geared and destroying everything, but that's the beginning of the end for my interest in playing that character.

However, unlike you, I still choose to play online - but unlike most people in this thread (looking at the ladder/non-ladder profile indicator on everyone's posts), I play almost exclusively ladder (seasonal mode). Ladder mode with its regular resets keeps my interest in the game going. It's an incentive for me to start new characters (well, it forces me to) and an incentive to try something different than before, with a regular interval. And depending on how active I am during a particular ladder season (it varies - some seasons I play more casually and take a break sooner, some seasons I play more actively and possibly all the way to the next season reset), I might not even reach "GG" / fully geared state by the time my interest dwindles (or until the next season reset). And being online means I can still help others. Being offline is a solitary experience, and there's nothing wrong with that, but for me it would be a quick way to kill my interest in the game if I only played offline, since I'd lose the whole community aspect of helping each other out in-game. I don't play in public games a lot, but each ladder reset is also a challenge to be ready to help people with Dclone and other things. And trading is pretty much a requirement to be able to be a helper rather than a helpee during a ladder season (assuming of course you don't play exclusively solo and don't care about helping others - but then you may as well play offline, like you say).

I seriously don't get these “justifications”. You can fix this with the crutch 'pX' command, you can fix that with map manipulation. You can even play the RNG itself to reliably farm high runes from LK chests. Now, apparently, it's okay to just Heroedit the stuff, as long as it can be hand-waved as “fair”. I'm not against people playing by their own rules and having fun with that — it's just not the same game, is it?
Offline in D2R is not the same as local characters were in LoD where you could play TCP/IP with friends and keep each other on the same page. It's a crippled mode with crutches, only useful as a sandbox for testing theorized builds, doing challenge runs, or modding.

It’s funny how much people’s reasons for playing this game differ, what they enjoy versus what annoys them.

Some enjoy the difficult progression, only to lose interest once they’ve become powerful enough.
Some take the shortcut: buying ideal gear on trading sites based on online guides, then endlessly grinding P8 Baal runs, even after hitting level 99. Or rather, they just wait in town for a portal straight to Baal, where they don't really have to do anything either maybe clicking one button and they are still enjoying it.
Then there’s @ShadowHeart and perhaps a few others, who play to help, thank to them.
On the flip side, there are those who play to cause trouble, don't thank them.

My own preferences regarding this game are evolving and changing, and that’s exactly why D2 is so great - even after 25 years and with those shifting preferences, the game remains fun.
