is it true that durability only goes down if you swing or do melee attacks?
can you simply use it for casting and it isnt damaged by monsters?
someone told me recently you can use Eth Infinity on a sorc since its only casting
and wont get damaged

You can, and that's true. You cannot restore the Cyclone Armor charges though. There is no benefit to using Eth Infinity on a sorc other than that she can share it with another character's merc who gets more damage from it.

OP: A good strat is to set left click to "throw", as you cannot throw and it will prevent you from accidentally attacking with it. This is, of course, if you don't use left click for a spell or something.

I guess. But why would you want to use any base except a Brandistock (unless you're sharing it with a merc on another char)? And for a Brandistock specifically, torch and anni get you to the requirements. So Eth is pointless. BTW Cyclone sucks too, so the charges there are a VERY minor consideration.

With several equipment setups it does not make much of a difference whether you have 30 or 40 fcr on weapon, e.g. Magefist + arach+ Spirit Monarch = 75; +30 from occu and you are good.
Occu not only gives all res but also 20 vita and most importantly 50 mf. The only drawback is the auto- Teleport.

Cyclone Armor on an ES Sorc is a strong extra layer of defense. Is it mandatory? No. Is it noticeable? Yes. And since it only takes 5% of the damage with maxed ES, it lasts almost forever.

In addition, you get some more from facets and Uber jewel.
So your +20% will effectively be around +4.7%.
The stronger your build is, the less important this extra damage becomes. It will barley change your total kill speed. But those 50mf can make a huge difference on the loot you get.
Occu is not "better", there is a trade off. You can decide what you prefer more: More def and more MF or a bit more damage.
