Can be used to make Runewords:
You must be using keyboard, right? Ctrl and Shift are so close, sometimes it's easy to hit the wrong Key.

After a 20 year break from D2 I started playing D2R in 2024 with my sons (9 and 10 years old)

Happened to me quite often (accidentally equipping rings with shift + click instead of Ctrl + click to drop stuff...)
Luckily, I didn't lose anything so far, just had to reequip. But I'm sure it will happen to me eventually.

you say that but i am DYING for an SOJ offline. I hit 97 on my amazon last night and i still don't have an Annihilus lol.
Well, even in comparison when I exclude trading (I better don`t tell how many SoJ I have in my Mule
), I think I found about 4-5 SoJ so far but only 2 Opalvein (one anti-perfect Magic 
which was still worth a Jah and that magnificent Cold one which I found soon after RotW was released and was then worth 20+ Jah...)

My recommendation for gambling is to spec out a dedicated character holding Edge and a maxed gheeds. One of my level 99 sorcs gets used for nothing bug gambling at this point. She has nothing that I can't live without on her.

But you are right if it concerns rare rings ofc.
