Description

Hello,

I am rather late to this news as I only came across my first golden portal in game today. It is glorious. I mean it’s a TP but wow.

Apparently you have to make all rune words to get one - is that right?

And for my sanity, here’s a poll on how many people have one. Do add your Yes or No please!

Aards.

Can be used to make Runewords:

Correct. It doesn't matter if you make them on ladder or nonladder, it's all combined. It is separated for softcore vs hardcore though, and offline.

I'm in CET (Central European Time)
My profile says Ladder, but I play both Ladder and Non-Ladder.

My Holy Grail Tracker is for Offline Hardcore.

If they move all the ladder-only runewords over to non-ladder i'll consider it. I just can't be bothered to play ladder again, there's no real motivation for me to do so.

They already announced that they will - the next patch drops on Tuesday next week (August 18) and will make all the ladder-only rune words available to make on non-ladder.

When in doubt, shiny golden everything:
The portal is pretty much the easiest one to get, at least for longer-standing players who don't just stick to SP/SSF (or who cheat on SP ^^), simply because you can trade your way to all of the required materials and hence all but eliminate the RNG factor of it. It does add up a bit in cost but since you can fairly easily sell most of the RWs again for cost or close to it (or way more if you get a lucky roll on one of the better ones), it kind of becomes self-funding. Though it can obviously take a while to get the investment back.

The set footsteps definitely took a bit more effort as you need to actively farm (or leech I guess) and then get lucky on the RNG part of it.

The unique glow..same as the set bit except wayyyyy harder/longer to complete, thanks to requiring a ton more RNG luck than just the set stuff.

They can all be turned on/off individually. And since the related follow-up patch, they do now also finally remember that you turned them on and you don't have to re-do it every game.

I rather like how the "
Gold
all over" pans out on my zon. Though some other classes definitely feel a bit more mismatched with it.

Worth pointing out for those still wondering how to get it all:
For the portal, you need to create one of each runeword. And you need to actively make it yourself. You cannot leech runeword-credit off of other people in your party/game.
For the sets and uniques, you need to be there (in the game, not the zone) when the item drops. Once identified, it will then get attributed not only to the chronicle of the person who found or identified it but also everyone else who was there and is hence eligible. Identifying alone doesn't cut it, you do need to be in the game when it drops. So no trading for UNID sacred armors and praying for a
Tyrael
's that way. ;)

I'm SSF, so I don't expect to hit these, but it'd be weird if they couldn't be turned off. That'd be an incentive for me to actively avoid completing this stuff.

I find it interesting to see enthusiasm for cosmetic rewards in a game that's never had any before. In Diablo IV there are a bunch of these custom portals available as cosmetic rewards that i don't even think about, much less use.

Anyone else feel the same? Maybe modern games have spoiled my expectations
7
Generally speaking, I don't care about cosmetic rewards. There needs to be something very specific that appeals to me aesthetically, but I find that the main drive to use them for most people has to do with status, not aesthetics.

For example, in my ideal world, skins in MOBAs or other multiplayer games would only be visible to the user (or there'd be a toggle to turn all skins off) because they greatly interfere with gameplay. But that's never happening because skins are the main product being sold and the whole point of using them is showing off.

These
Gold
effects look horrible to me, so I would never use them. Same thing happened to me with wings in D3.

Enthusiasm for OCD triggers is more like it.
"There's a progress bar! Must..reach..100%..ugh!"

Cosmetics are merely a side effect of that.

People really need to stop caring so much about the opinion of others imo. Even more so for strangers on the interwebs.
Hell, even if one does care about the "status flex", effectively going "I spent $5 on this!" isn't exactly a massive flex.

Personally, I don't care if my char shows as a neon rainbow pony to others, so long as it looks good to me when I'm playing it.

But yeah, fully agreed, it'd be awesome if you could turn off other people's skin choices. And/or replace them with your own. Depending on the game at least. Basically replace "l33thaxx0r_420 needs to flex his $5 purchase" with "yay, I get to look at what I find more appealing!".

Hell, that'd actually massively increase their cosmetics revenue from people like me (read: "personal preference = good, absurd pseudo-flex for strangers = bad"-people)..
total spend on skins to flex for others: 0.
total spend on skins I prefer for myself: not a ton tbh but def not 0.
total spend on skins for basically everything, well beyond only the stuff I myself would ever use, to make everyone else look more appealing to me: not sure I've ever seen that option but it would vastly out-earn the "self only" sales.
