LOL I remember Beta testing D1 after getting a hard disk of the 3 level demo from a gaming magazine I had subscribe to... was in my late 20s then. Have played every series including IV pretty hard - hate to even estimate the number of hours spent... maybe insane
i really enjoyed those days, the game magazine with the demo disks
i remember playing resident evil 2 demo , blew us away
this was gamings golden era and itll never come close to that again it seems
hard copys with manuals to read. strategy guide books
Admittedly - Diablo 2 (Original and Resurrected) has eaten more of my lifetime, than any other game.
But if someone asks me, which game (till now) is at the top of my list, it is The Witcher 3 (with both DLC's, especially Blood & Wine).
My IRL friend group and I have been wondering the same thing. I didn’t quit the game, the game quit me: my level 94 main bowazon expired while I was away at college, and it was too crushing a defeat to really come back from. Then Diablo 3 came out, but it just wasn’t the same… it still contributed to me ultimately dropping out of college though, so, I absolutely understand how D1 could have gotten OP in trouble there xD Perhaps we are just a bunch of gambling addicts at the end of the day, but I do think there’s more to it than that. Spoiler
We’ve all been really surprised how much we’ve been playing since we picked D2 back up to introduce some people who’d never played before, and literally cross Hell completion off an older party member’s bucket list. Most weren’t sure they would even commit all the way through a single playthrough of Hell difficulty and figured we would do the story once and be done, but everyone is still engaged and preparing for Ubers together two months in— rare for our group to actually stick with something so long, so this game is clearly doing something special even for the most habitually flaky members of our party.
I’m sure nostalgia is part of it, but I also think for me a lot of the appeal is the same reason I keep going back to 3.5e D&D: there’s just SO MUCH you can do differently when building your characters for endgame, especially now with the sunder charms, and that’s not really something I feel the sequels (or 5e) offer… at least not in the same way.
But then there’s the new stuff. Out of all the things I expected to see happen to Diablo 2, getting a new expansion was not one of them. The Warlock is surprisingly enjoyable! It’s wild to me that they made a class that feels just like a character I imagined for myself as a kid but was never able to execute satisfactorily in-game (a necromancer with Revive just didn’t quite cut it for my demon army dreams, and the telekinetic weapons of course were not a thing— I compensated with Bone spears and a Spirit sword and used my imagination). It’s a whole new world out there with the Terror Zones too, which feel a lot more engaging to me than the Rifts in D3 ever did, and hunting for prized demons like rare pokémon is a neat new challenge. So I can’t even just chalk it up to nostalgia when there ARE new things to do besides run Baal ten million times to get to 99.
TL;DR: IMO, Nostalgia can't be everything because new players are still getting hooked, so I do think the Warlock expansion was just icing on a cake that was already pretty great. As others have said, many 20-year-old games would likely be this popular if they were still getting this kind of support, and some still are even without that support.
The chronicle hunt, however, I'll admit is pure crack to me… I no longer have to keep track of my unique finds and log my runeword completion manually in a notebook, which… alright, you got me there, I’ll admit this particular habit and my encyclopaedic knowledge of runes, sets, and uniques *might* be pushing me over the Edge into qualifying for madness.
(edit: whoops this got longer than i thought and i’m not sure how to hide stuff under a cut. will figure that out when i’m back at the computer. sorry! put three paragraphs of essay under spoilers.)
the staying power of d2 is remarkable.
the only other franchise lasting 10+ years was halo.
Not sure what you mean by "lasting" here, but this kind of longevity is not uncommon among fighting games. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo came out in 1994, Street Fighter III Third Strike came out in 1999, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 came out in 2000, and all of them still have tournaments today.
Even just among Blizzard games, Starcraft 1 still has an active competitive scene in 2026.
Early Blizzard games were all top notch. Heck, I'd like to play Lost Vikings again! And who here played Rock N Roll Racing? Still plenty of SC2 and WoW players, too.

Lost Vikings is amazing. I was so addicted to it a few decades ago that I was able to finish the whole game in an afternoon.
And Blackthorne — Killing orcs with a shotgun is too damn fun, but for some reason I never managed to finish the game.
my wife is highly unimpressed that i'm playing this game (albeit for only 20-30mins a day). i told her i played this back in college days (Um, that should date me quite well).
I played d2 LoD from beginning in the early 2000s (already 30 in these days)
I was leaving work with my wife to go to holydays
my collegue called me because he had just dropped Windforce (game changer at that time (cant remember exactly which version but before a lot of patches))
I just get back to see it at work (Windforce in game) my wife waiting for me (luckily for me we caught the plane in time after that)
still playing 25 years later, still married XD
EDIT: the "Diablo" (1) cinematic intro !!!!
EDIT 2: I miss my old Amiga

Age of Empires franchise as well, especially AOE2. Original had 13 civilizations, we are up to 52 now, with more to come in the latest expansion.
But I'd say this underscores others' comments about mechanics. AOE2 mechanics and ability to optimize are absurd, especially with all teh different civ matchups.
Resident Evil 2 1998 (speedruns or for fun) and Diablo 2 somehow stick all this years, seems I always come back to them one way or another, something about nostalgia or the feeling about being cozy and familiar, I dont know tbh.
Could be insane?, I guess, considering some people drink, Smoke or watch soccer all day, Im not worried as long nobody bothers me and I bother nobody.
Just, pick your poison.
PS: The fact that we’re all old dogs it shows on old games being played and also, writing on forums, pure Stone (golden) internet age.
I played D2 LoD back in 2009, without internet, knowing nothing about runewords, breakpoints, IAS and all the acronyms.
I loved my Zealer and I was very into hammers (the weapon, not the spell). In Act IV I found a rare Hammer and kept it for a veeery long time. I just loved that weapon. But I couldn't finish the game then. I was stuck in Hell Act II.
Then I took a break from the game for 15 years until Easter of 2024 when I continued and then finished the 2009 game (yes, the 2007 installed Windows XP is still running to this day on that old computer).
From that Easter I managed to get 10 characters to level 99.
So, as OP asked, I think we are insane in some degree.
in fact I played d1 and d2 as soon as they went public
If I remember well I think I had a single two CD cases with D2 another one with LoD
and then bought a few copies where all the CDs where in I'm pretty sure I still have these copies somewhere in a cardboard upstairs
found them
