Is whenever someone tells you to "add" them, does it mean add them as a friend on battle net? I am very confused

I take it to mean that you add them as a friend on battlenet, allowing you to jump into each other's games etc. Very useful for trading

Yes, adding them as a friend on Battle.net is exactly what they mean. You copy their Bnet Id, from the forum, and then paste it on Bnet by clicking the person image.
