Weird, maybe I'm wrong and only a moderator can do it or you can only do it on certain types of posts. I can't find the option anywhere on my own posts, but I know I've seen the green check mark and question answered text boxes (also green). Someone will know better than me.

That's weird. Someone else did report a couple of weeks ago that they also couldn't mark best answers in their own threads, but we didn't delve deeper into it. As far as I know, normal users should be able to do this in their own threads, so I'm not sure what's preventing you from doing it. Maybe @Teebling can answer when he has time.
