Sad to see that had happened to you. You, and everyone else for that matter, can only learn from this.
When trading in lobbies:
Never ctrl+click your items when prompted from the other party.
Linking is done through shift+click. The script is usually: "Can't use chat. PMing you *links an item in PM*. Can you link your item?"You ask how? (It's done by linking to game chat, then switching to PM chat manually) "Ctrl+click". Then you call them out, tell them they are human garbage and report them.
Never trade without double-checking what's offered to you in a window.
People will close the trade window on you with a script like: "Oops, gotta make room" or "Hey, that's cool, just add some pgems, if you have. Or add ist.""Don't have." "That's ok." Here you ask them, if this is the part where they are going to scam you, most don't even hide it and will say yes. Tell them they are human garbage. If you want to see it played out they then switch an item to a one with same graphic, or worse stats, or base instead of runeword (You can link one-of unique inventory items you don't have on you by preparing a link and then use the history of a chat to repeat it, so be wary even with torches and annis). This is where you hover your mouse over said item, confirm they are a scammer and call them human garbage and report.
You never drop items in public lobbies without password.
You never drop items in lobbies with password unless you know the other trader and have agreed to this prior.
You never drop metal items in lobbies with password even if you know the other person, but they play a necromancer and you don't see an Iron Golem around.

thx for the heads up! and sorry for your loss man :/
Altough prove me wrong:
D2 is having thousands or maybe tens/hundres of thousand trades daily and cases like this are extreme minority.
No need to picture trading like that in our heads and call for any revolutionary updates. Cheater/scammers should be called out, but I would say other than that trading works fine as it is in D2 and I kinda enyojed it so far.
In response.. Lightning Bolt you to the face!
2026: Show me your Hephasto and I'll tell what kind of man you are.

If possible; report the player through ingame / launcher systems if there is such. I have not looked into those that closely.
It really sucks that people are willing to go this low, but these are the same people who grow up to be grifters using nft, crypto, AI and other means to make easy money from morons falling for their scams.
This sort of thing is all the more reason that I'd like to see an Auction House implemented into D2R.
Just post your stuff up for sale ingame and wake up to an inbox full of runes, keys, Gold and gems.
Auction house ruined D3, why you think it would be different for D2?
Did it? I never played D3 and D4 so I'm unfamiliar with it. My point of reference is the Auction House from World of Warcraft 10+ years ago.
Could you eleborate?
Auction house indeed ruined Diablo 3 early days and so many scams and grifts occurred in that aswell. I sold a darn Dagger (rare Dagger) back in the early steps for 25€ ... a pair of daggers... just because they were so darn good. This is a big problem in video games. Spending money to get ahead.
In a way, it adds spice but it does sting.
I’d also be wary of large quantity trades asking you to drop.
I few weeks ago I had 30ist ready to trade for a Jah. I struck a deal on another trade website.
I enter the game and start loading up ists and he loads his Jah in the trade window. Halfway through the trade is cancelled :
“Just drop dude, 30 runes?”
“Can we trade in the window? it will take about a minute”
“No just drop, quicker”
“Ok after you ..”
You can see where this is going. He threatens to trade elsewhere and I’m fine with that. It is not worth the risk. Afterwards I checked his reviews and saw I was validated and he was known for “drop trade, grab, exit”
Think Mos Eisley, trust no one. That being said I’ve never had an attempted scam from the folks here.
