Superunique beetle right outside Lut Gholein, earlier patches?

No data yet

2

Description

Playing D2 LoD practically since launch (yay battlechest with the Bart Farkas book). I was just playing casually through the acts with some lower level characters, and in act 2, leaving
Lut Gholein
after the sewers, I clearly remember in earlier patches a superunique beetle in the
Rocky Waste
, right outside the
Lut Gholein
gates. He was constantly there and served as some sort of
Rite of Passage
for my characters there, kinda like
Coldcrow
in act 1 (the Cave).

ChatGPT seems to think I am confusing him with
Beetleburst
or I am thinking of random unique beetles in the
Rocky Waste
. But I am really confused now, as I clearly remember it. Am I tripping or is this some sort of Mandela effect?

When people say "plz", because it is shorter than "please", I feel perfectly justified to answer "no", because it is shorter than "yes".

I asked Grok to see if he could come up with anything, he said this.

No, there was never a superunique beetle (or scarab) right outside
Lut Gholein
gates in the
Rocky Waste
in any patch of Diablo 2 LoD.

I don't remember this either and have been playing since 1.0. That said, I am old and have forgotten many things.

There are some super uniques that were either removed by a patch or were never actually included in the final version of the game (only exist in the game data), according to https://diablo.fandom.com/wiki/Super_Unique_Monsters.

Act 1: Act 4:
  • Taintbreeder (removed)
  • The Tormentor (removed)
  • Darkwing (Winged Death) (removed)
  • Riftwraith the Cannibal (removed)
Act 4:
  • Hell's Belle (Anodized Elite) (removed)
  • Blaze
    Ripper (removed)
  • Magma Torquer (removed)
  • Vinvear Molech (removed)
  • Axe
    Dweller (removed)
I think only the first one ever actually existed in a playable version of the game (the others merely exist in the game's files but were never used). But someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Flamespike was the last Quill Rat of any type found in the game. In the original Diablo II, it and his pack of 5 or 6 minions always spawned in the
Inner Cloister
area, and were usually the only monsters in that area. A lot of the time they spawn almost directly on top of the waypoint there, making it a bit of a hazard to use the teleporting pad.

I'm in CET (Central European Time)
My profile says Ladder, but I play both Ladder and Non-Ladder.
My profile says Softcore, but I play both Softcore and Hardcore.

Whoa, I actually remember the quill rat pack! I swear I still enter that area expecting an elite pack to always be there (now only sometimes), and I guess that's why!

I do NOT remember Taintbreeder, but it sure made me laugh. XD

I was going to say the exact same thing after reading through that! You beat me to it though. At least that explains the confusing memories I have of both versions, I can see why they removed it though.

OP
I know about Flamespike. This is really, really weird. It must have been a coincidence that a random unique just spawned there a lot and I must have somehow put this in my head that there used to be a superunique.

Act 1:
I Knew I wasn't crazy, and that there was a Quillbeast that made porting to the
Outer Cloister
dangerous. (basically
Duriel
all over again with those old load screens).

For Snowieken, I have to say that several times I got Uniques (not Super Uniques) and their pack waiting at the gate of
Lut Gholein
(an perhaps more often when it was door near
Drognan
than near
Greiz
... but unsure), usually either a Saber Cat or a Beetle. But I don't remember a Super Unique.

It's possible that you have a false Memory (we all have them), or that you're conflating actual memories of a unique with a supeunique? The only suberunique beetle in the game going all the way back to patch 1.00, June 29, 2000 is
Beetleburst
.
