Original classic is still dear to my heart. I want to go back and do a few runs again with the pain of the original game, but I have gotten so used to the QOL since that it might be too painful.

I still have two sets of CD's with keys that I tried to install on my newer computer, but the DVD drive won't read the LOD disc to install. I was going to relive 1.07 or whatever it was with the LOD expansion, but alas I haven't figured out how to get it installed and the Blizzard web site is offering little help beyond a broken link and a disclaimer that it is unsupported and they won't do anything to help.
Just buy an external CD drive? I think that should work.
I have one buried somewhere. That was on my list for trying to get it to work, whenever I find the time for such things. Instead I'll just do another few Chaos runs on D2R.
You can mount it from your hard disc, portable drive as I did last summer, or thumb drive (in Win 10 & 11, right click and choose mount) and have it function just as it would in a CD/DVD drive, or since it's an ISO, you can burn it to disc, or you can format a thumb drive to behave like a CD drive.

Man, I wish I still had my original battle chest from back in the day. That soundtrack CD used to live full time in my player in the mid 2000s

From what I remember, the immunities thing was worse, namely that -all- monsters in hell had an immunity (or at least quite high res) to physical. (But I might be mistaken here...)
On the plus side, life and mana leech from skeletons worked :)
Immunities were introduced in LoD patch 1.10. It was the same patch that introduced a lot of the best rune words like Infinity, Enigma and Grief - it also introduced synergies and Act 5 guest monsters, and also massively buffed monsters overall, it wasn't just immunities. Patch 1.10 was a huge change to the game.
https://diablo.fandom.com/wiki/Patch_1.10_(Diablo_II)

LoD existed without that patch for almost 2 years (the LoD release patch was 1.07, IIRC). And D2 existed without LoD for a whole year before that :)

All D2/LoD patch notes (it also has some D2R patch notes but it's incomplete):
https://diablo.fandom.com/wiki/Diablo_I ... on_history

(side note: yes, fandom sucks and that page is slow as I-don't-know-what, but it does have some useful info, like the old patch notes)
Immunities were added with LoD with 1.07 actually, triple immunes could spawn (
Lord De Seis
shudders) and even
Duriel
was cold immune which is very strange for an act boss heh, although
Cold Mastery
worked differently in that patch (it acted as a multiplier rather than a straight subtraction, so 50%
Cold Mastery
meant a monster with 198% cold res would have 198 * 0.5 = 99% cold res) and could break immunes so cold sorcs were particularly good, especially since
Static Field
was still uncapped.

Having said that 1.07 was a rough patch that's only available on the disks, the Bnet servers were instantly updated to 1.08 when LoD released and then 1.09 would roll out about 2 months later in August 2002. :D
