Hi,
I was wondering how mana leach works with Lightning Fury when you overkill a monster.
For example say a monster has 1000 health and Lightning Fury does 3000 lightning damage and 500 physical damage. Does the lightning damage get applied first and you get no mana leach or does the physical damage get applied first so you get some leach?

Mana/Life Leach only works for physical damage.
But keep in mind that even not showing on character details screen, Lightning Fury HAS a chance to hit...
The lightning damage from the skill and the "split Bolts" will happen even if you miss,
But the raw attack damage (your physical damage and any elemental damage from your equipment) will only happen if you hit and only on the main target.
And the Javelin will only have a chance to Pierce if you hit...
I think it is better to invest on mana after each kill, to refill you mana with Lightning Fury Amazon (I use Silkweave with mine, another option are Caster Gloves but may be difficult/expensive find a good one...)

Mine Javazon does not have mana leech, just mana after each kill as Fredkid stated. And it is enough most of the time.
A merc with Insight is really important as well. A good 17- Meditation Insight will fill your mana really fast.
And, last but not least, a good CTA will increase your mana pool.

Thanks Fredkid that clears some things up. Assuming Lightning Fury hits it will do both physical and lightning damage. So, which damage source gets applied first? It is important since if lightning is applied first you may leach less or not at all from monsters with low hp.
I think (but I am not sure) that they are applied simultaneously.
The real question then is "is leech applied based on actual enemy life pool or on pure damage made" for anything doing more damage than life.
As stated above, only the physical part of the damage applies leech (which is why people prefer Eth Titan's Revenge: 50% more physical damage is much more leech).

OP
Right so if a mob has 100 health and you do 500 pure physical damage it is not clear to me if the mana leach is applied to the pure damage of 500 or the effective damage of 100.
If it is applied to the effective damage done then I don't think both lighting and physical damage could occur at the same time because there would be no way to calculate the effective physical damage in that case. For instance, a mob with 1000 health, 3000 Lightning Fury damage and 500 physical damage. The effective physical damage is 500 if the physical is applied first and 0 if the lighting is applied first and I don't see how you would calculate it if they are both applied simultaneously.
Anyone know if mana leach is applied to effective damage or pure damage?

I assume that is total damage....
People explore a lot of the "flaw" or awkward behaviors of the game...
And as life leach is a very used mechanic, I assume that if there was something that awkward about life leach people would already explored this in some way (like recommending to not use any elemental damage on physical builds or to focus on full life monster when you are at low life...)

IIRC, Necrarch is correct. All sources of damage are calculated first into and then applied simultaneously. Those sources of damage of damage are applied to "actual enemy life pool" and not "pure damage made".Necrarch wrote: 7 months ago I think (but I am not sure) that they are applied simultaneously.

Let's say after your attack's damage was all calculated and you dealt 200 damage.
100 was physical, 50 was cold, and 50 was lightning.
Meaning 50% of your attack was physical, 25% was cold, and 25% was lightning.
The monster you're attacking has only 100 life.
Assuming NO resistance modifiers, def modifiers, etc
Your 200 dmg attack would deal 100 points of damage and the actual damage would be calculated based of the ratios/percentages of your attack.
So, in the end you would deal 50 points physical, 25 cold, and 25 lightening.
So you cannot beat up a Act 1 Normal monster and gain thousands of life

Nope, you cannot. I just tested it again to make sure.

Thanks Knappogue.
So I feel like then we are almost there.
Continuing with Knappogue's example, is the leach applied to the 100 pure physical damage or the 50 effective physical damage?

The leech would be applied to the 50 physical damage that was actually applied to the monster's life pool. There is no 'overkill' when it comes to life or mana leech.Tauriel123 wrote: 7 months ago Thanks Knappogue.

To sum it all up:
Life/mana leech is calculated based on the attack's (all sources of damage summed up together and applied as one number) percentage of physical damage that was applied to the monster's actual life pool.
