Hi

Is there a "minimum recommended" 'magic find'?

From the "voices in my head"😛, I personally try to keep my 'magic find' at a minimum of 166 (which is the minimum to have an effective +100% chance for uniques - https://maxroll.gg/d2/d2planner/0i5c0au9 )

NOTE: Coincidently 166 is the average magic find you get with 3 Tal Rasha's Wrappings items (
Tal Rasha's Adjudication
+
Tal Rasha's Fine-Spun Cloth
+
Tal Rasha's Guardianship
-> 163 -168 mf)

+% mf is a balance between what’s available to you, your kill speed and survivability. As a general rule past like 350 you start to get diminishing returns, unless you have really good other gear and really need something specific.

For my mf characters anywhere past 200 is good enough for me. Other may want more or less

All my other chars i basically don’t care, but I’m way in the late game. At the beginning of ladder you’d probably want as much as you can as early as you can

As with so many things, it depends on what you want.

There is no general minimum. If you're just looking for drops on the side as you play, they will happen naturally no matter what.

If you're actively farming stuff but want to keep a focus on finding bases, your minimum mf = your maximum mf = 0 to maximize the chance of not ruining bases by them rolling magic.

If you're actively farming stuff and are looking for a more even mix then anywhere between 150 and 300 is probably about right, merely making sure you do not
Sacrifice
any kill speed for your MF.

If you're actively farming stuff and are specifically looking to MF then personally, I would use a build specifically targeted to that that can afford to drop non-MF gear left and right and will end up with at bare minimum 400mf, ideally 500+.

It all boils down to what you're looking to focus on and where you do your farming.

Just to confirm, mf only affect the chance of a item that would already be dropped to be magic/rare/set/unique, right?
(in other words, you will not drop more charms/jewels/rings/amulets, that cannot be non-magic, with a higher mf - it just increase the chance of the one that drop to be rare/set/unique)

Correct it won't affect the mob drop chance in items, simply put, it will just increase the odds that it rolls up from a White-quality item. So like when you drop a magic
Thresher
early into a ladder and go "I wish I didn't have 300 MF right now." cause it could have been an item you could have tried to socket instead. Same with when it rolls drops in general, sometimes it lands on rare/unique. But if Andy's drop chance on an ammy lets say is 15% then it'd always be 15%. Well with exceptions to like player difficulty, that may affect it I'm not sure.

You really have to balance killing power and MF for each character. I find that my
Hydra
/FB sorc could have full MF gear on and still TP to and kill Meph easily. Now that she is a
Nova
sorc, it's much more difficult and risky. While I love the idea of having all my MF gear on and trying for max treasure-hunter mode, it's simply not viable with some characters. You definitely notice the diminishing returns as well.

DR starts at 250+. There is no reason to go higher then 200-250 unless you are farming magic items specifically but then you would just spam
Travincal
on a gf barb.

You don't need more then
Shako
Enigma and
Gheed
's if you are mfing , 200mf is more then enough, I never even run MF on any build, the only build I am using
Shako
and
Gheed
's on is a Hammerdin.

Most fire sorcs and
Nova
these days run close to 0 MF so there is no recomended lowest MF, it's optional and personally I agree that it is a useless stat.

Considering trade yes ...

At least for what I traded and saw being sold, on average, bases, magic charms, and "perfect" rare items sell higher/easy them unique/set...

(Most "common" usefull set/unique are available for low cost and sometimes free!!)
