Spirit is an excellent end-game caster shield and mid-game weapon Runeword. It's fairly inexpensive (considering the skill bonus) and is often rolled many times to get 35% Faster Cast Rate.
Spirit is commonly equipped on switch alongside Call To Arms to increase the amount of Life and Mana the player receives when casting Battle Orders.

Paladins can try to build this runeword in a 4socket paladin shield - the can be rolled with automod adding resists (e.g. chromatic, which adds up to 45 all resist).
Please note, that since a 4os (4 open socket) item requires ilvl 26+ the best place to farm a base is normal difficulty The Secret Cow Level which you can then use the Larzuk quest (Siege on Harrogath) to add sockets which will be maxed at 4.
The last half of a5 normal can drop the bases, but it's usually the easiest to farm in Norm cows for your bases and since Cow King being killed doesn't prevent you from opening Portal to the Secret Cow Level (D2R only) you should have no problem blazing through norm cows to find your base (Targe for paladins can also drop here for another 4os from Larzuk - Rush another char to a5 for Larzuk quest if needed or use Recipe: Add Sockets to Normal Weapon/Recipe: Add Sockets to Normal Shield to try and get max sockets).
It may go without saying, but the +2 To All Skills found on Spirit is the largest skill bonus that can be found on an off-hand item for the Amazon, Druid, and Sorceress.
Auric Shields (Paladin), Shrunken Heads (Necromancer), 1-handed weapons and 2-handed swords (Barbarian), and Katars (Assassin) can all provide higher bonuses either to All Skills or to all skills of a particular tree.
