you do lose XP but just a little bit
you don't lose XP on normal and nightmare, but on hell you do lose xp.
if yoyu recover your body it's just a little bit, they implemented this change recently, before it was a higher percentage of your xp, regardless if you recovered ur body

If you die on hell mode, you lose 10% of your XP.

If you recover your body in the same game you died, you only gain back 75% of that amount.

For low items I also accept: Perfect Amys, Ral, Hel, Tokens, Keys. Please don't offer runes lower than Pul (with the named exceptions).

I'm pretty sure you lose XP on nightmare too, unless they changed that recently. I do know on hell you lose one full bar when you die, and get 75% of it back if you grab the body. Not sure about nightmare values.

You also lose Gold, so put most of it in your shared stash instead of personal stash!

Another quirk that's important to know. If you leave the game with multiple bodies on the Ground from trying to recover your body, only the body worth the most Gold is saved for the next game. You can easily accidentally pick up gear, or gear yourself, with items that are worth more to Charsi and die. Save, quit, your gear is gone.

There is a 10% exp penalty if you exit the game and recover your body in a new game. 2.5% exp penalty if you recover your body in the same game. Has been like that since the beginning of D2R.
There is also a Gold penalty for the Gold in your personal stash that can't be recovered. Is it 10%?

Just put all your money into the shared stash, whenever you are in town.
That way you lose NOTHING of your Gold.
Only contra is that you need to visit your stash and grab money if you want to buy something or Revive your merc.
Still better than losing money, in my mind...

There are lots of different percentages being thrown out and those values are referencing different things.

Just for clarity:

When you die you lose 10% of the amount of experience needed to reach the next level a.k.a. one segment of the experience bar. You do not lose 10% of what you currently have (the exp received since your last level).
You cannot lose a level from dying. If you had 5% experience since your last level (one half of one exp bar segment) you will lose all 5%, but no more.
If you die a second time without collecting your body you will lose another 10%. This will repeat for all subsequent deaths until you reach 0% exp.
If you are able to recover your bod(ies) in the same game you died, you will recover 75% of what you lost (7.5% of the amount of experience needed to reach your next level).
If you are not able to recovery your bod(ies) in the same game you died, you will not recover any experience lost.
