I remember that before Terror zones killing diablo was the only way to gather experience in your 90s. So I tried it a couple dozen times with my lvl 96 sorc.. Data base says diablo grants ~2m experience at lvl 94. But I got some 16k if I"m not mistaken. I understand there is some complicated formula depending on the lvl difference behind it, but does it really reduce the yield by 99%?
Or what am I missing?

Yeah, the xp penalty in d2 is actually quite massive and does drop you to barely over 1% at 96. Or barely over half a % at 98.

With dia or in TZs you're at least generally within 5 levels, even at 98, so the mlvl penalty can largely be ignored. But the general player level penalty remains and you can't do much about that.
