So, out of curiosity, how soon can you get a 3 socket

Helm?

Max Socket numbers are determined by iLvl (item level), which is usually mLvl (the level of the monster that dropped it).

Each base item has a different value of sockets for iLvl 1-25, then iLvl 26-40 and finally iLvl 41+.

When looking at the normal helms, for the non-class specific ones, the helms that can show 3 sockets are the ones bellow, which start to drop with 3 sockets at iLvl41+:

• Crown
• Grand Crown
• Great Helm
• Mask

The class specific ones can start to drop with 3 sockets at iLvl 26+:

• Avenger Guard (Barbarian only)
• Assault Helmet (Barbarian only)
• Horned Helm (Barbarian only)
• Fanged Helm (Barbarian only)
• Jawbone Cap (Barbarian only)
• Hawk Helm (Druid only)
• Wolf Head (Druid only)
• Antlers (Druid only)
• Falcon Mask (Druid only)
• Spirit Mask (Druid only)

Considering Uniques mLvl are aLvl+3 (Area Level + 3) the soonest you can drop a non-class specific 3 socket

Helm is at areas with aLvl 38 (only for unique and their minions kill).
At aLvl 39 you can drop from champions and at aLvl 41 regular mosnter can drop one.

Looking at normal difficulty, I couldn't find any area with aLvl 38 but the first area with aLvl 39 is

Abaddon, which is not part of the game's quest progressions.

The first area that you'll visit during progression that has aLvl39 is

Worldstone Keep Level 1. Also,

Worldstone Keep Level 3 has aLvl 42 which means normal monsters are able to drop a

Helm like this.

Also, some mosnter have a fixed mLvl. For example, Diablo has a mLvl of 40 in normal difficulty so not an option.

• Nihlathak has a whopping mLvl of 68 on normal!
• Thresh Socket has mLvl of exactly 41 (and "Socket" on his name )
• Frozenstein an mLvl of 46.

Not that you should be farming those super uniques on normal for 3os helms, as WSK lvl 3 would be way more efficient.

For the class specific itens (3os starting with iLvl 26), the first Lvl 23 areas are in Act 3.
Also the very first area of Act 4 normal (

Outer Steppes) is already aLvl 26 so would be your best bet for finding your base.

Besides Lore, another alternatives are the new in 2.6 runewords Ground, Cure and Bulwark. Those runeworks tipically outclass Radiance.

This is an okay runeword for it's price but by the time you find a 3 open socket

Helm (which is in Hell difficulty) you will probably have found something better.

Still might be useful when twinking a character but overall it is outclassed by Lore.

@crocorinho You don't need to be in Hell to find a 3os

I got a 3os

Crown in the Normal difficulty Throne room (non-terrorized) (aLvl 43), I was very surprised. Normal The

Worldstone Keep Level 3 is aLvl 42, so that works too.

You can get a 3 open socket Crown, Mask or Great Helm, as long as item level is 41+

Nightmare

Jail Level 1 is alvl 41, so from there on out you can find a 3os

Helm.

The same is true for the class-specific Barbarian/Druid only helms/pelts.

You are probably thinking of 3os Tiaras, which have a qLvl of 70, which means Hell

Monastery Gate onwards (except some caves, see https://diablo2.diablowiki.net/Area_Level)
