Description

Hello D2io Community,

Beware. Scam alert.

Just had the unpleasant experience of 2 scammers operating on the US server trying to pull a fast one using an old switching technique.

Game was:

"Enigma 4 Rune".

"[Removed by moderator]" showed 2 enigmas, a
Dusk Shroud
and a
Mage Plate
. Price wanted was
Jah
Ist
.

I asked for the duskshroud one just as another player "[Removed by moderator]" entered.

[Removed by moderator] opened the trade window and posted a Magic Duskshroud instead. [Removed by moderator] waited, then asked "Did you get him?".

I cancelled the trade and then both started insulting me.

These two friends seem to be working in tandem.

User IDs are:

[Removed by moderator]

and

[Removed by moderator].

Be aware people. Scammers are the minority but these two seem to be active.

I went ahead and removed the names/tags in the OP. Please note that we do not condone public call-outs, shaming or witch hunts here as it is ultimately always simply your word against theirs. Or more accurately your word against someone who can't defend themselves as they don't even know they're being called out.

That said, when trading with someone you don't know and don't have ample reason to trust, ALWAYS double-check the item in the trade window before accepting. And never agree to arbitrarily proposed drop trades instead of using the trade window. Those scams are as old as D2 itself.

OP
Thank you Schnorki. I think the advice is helpful and good common sense.

However, I think we need to be careful with labeling well-intentioned scam warnings among the community as being witch hunts or public shaming. This was simply an attempt to prevent others falling foul of an active scam attempt.

That said, I note the position of the Mod team on this issue, so will refrain from doing so in future.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying you're lying and it didn't happen or that you're not well-intended. We all know that scams like these are sadly a never-ending story.

Be that as it may though, the simple truth is that we (read: "not Blizzard") will never be able to actually prove anything one way or the other so it is always just one side's word against another in topics like this. And if we let that become a thing, we will inevitably end up not only with people being framed as scammers for genuine mistakes or misunderstandings (which has already happened multiple times in the past) but also with people starting public shaming campaigns with no foundation whatsoever against people they simply don't like. Such is the sad truth of the interwebs and the world we live in. So to avoid either of those becoming daily business, "no public calling out" it is.
