Hello. I played the original D2 like 20 years ago, and recently decided I had to get Resurrected mostly for nostalgia, and I'm having a fun time with it.
So I'm not a total noob, but I'm afraid this is going to be a bit of a noob question.
How do people typically farm higher level runes? Higher than Hell Countess that is.
I ask this because when browsing the market, I was a little shocked at how favourably seemingly easy-to-find Perfect Gems or keys exchange with runes I've never seen even once. This suggests there must be a more systematic way to acquire them than just....going to high level areas and hoping for the best.
I've finished Hell on one char and have a few others at reasonable levels, and so far the highest I've gotten was a Gul from The Hellforge quest. Other than that, I've never seen anything over Mal, and even the handful before that seem exceptionally rare.
So where do they all come from?

Can be used to make Runewords:

Hello and welcome
I play this game now for ca. 1,5 years (on average I suppose ca. 1h per day in the evenings). I have found so far 5 Jah, 3 Ber, 3 Cham and even 1 Zod and it seems this is very lucky
After a 20 year break from D2 I started playing D2R in 2024 with my sons (9 and 10 years old)
Time Zone: UTC/GMT +1/+2 (Germany)
Online workdays: casually from 07:00-09:00 pm
Online weekends: casually midday to evening
Non-Ladder | Softcore | Expansion

In normal way, it produce 2 Jah worth product every day.
In rotw, there are different way, previously there is corpse hook method that can produce around 1 Jah worth product every 3 hour in my estimation.
however for easy management, it produce 1 Jah worth thing every 8 hour, slightly better than regular bot...
it isnt that fun. but consider later days you can pick whatever you want in very easy way....
Please be aware, all my trade is in non ladder d2r. Not warlock.
Main be it's bots. Will not argue about that.
But IMO it is because at some point of the game you already made good runewords and your killing speed increases. Then you start getting high runes more often. And at that very point you need gems to craft or reroll charms +runes for that in huge quantities. You also getting good gear worth selling more often.
If your killing speed on Hell is low due to bad gear my advice is to farm Nightmare Terror zones. More kills => more chances to get runes above that Gul you have.
Also if you are playing online trade that Gul for something that will improve your killing speed right now instead of waiting for other runes to combine it with.

Hi and welcome back to Sanctuary
As everyone said, bots pull the prices down. There are also websites that sell for real money, people who have amassed vast hoards of runes through the years on non ladder (Battle.net never shut down and you could transfer your old characters to D2R), cross realm trading (Asia/US/Europe). But don't let this discourage you, many players don't use any of these (I think). Gems are needed in high quantities for crafting and rerolling by rich players, so they buy them in bulk at somewhat expansive prices.
For getting runes legit, there is no other way than good old farming. The Council in A3 is known to be not too bad for that, the Cows or any zone with good trash mob density. Or maybe you can count the A4 forge quest as an alternative, which in Hell can give you up to Gul (IIRC). Some people will rush you through the game in exchange for your forge quest, or they will make many new chars and rush them with multiple windows of the game open or in a group, in order to farm this quest.
Personally since D2R dropped I have found several Bers, one or two Jahs, quite enough Vex and Ohms, not many Lo (one or two) and never ever Cham and Zod.

OP
Well damn. So basically, nobody actually farms them and the prices are just artificially low because of a sea of bot and legacy surplus?
Bit disappointing, but I guess I'll work with that. I'm currently leveling a Gold-item Barb so I suppose I'll give Travincal a few shots, that can be his target.
Thanks for the replies!

Hork barb is best in Trav period. Trav is literally the best place to hork. Anyone with a horker is fucking up the council for double drops.
As far as farming for Jah or any other high rune - you don't.
You play the game and along the way you find items that you can trade for Jah (like statues sets, keysets, WSS sets... and rare uniques and also bases).
As @renard mentioned, you don't really farm for high runes.
Play
find runes / upgrade gear
find more runes and trade items
Make Enigma
Be the hero you were meant to become

I've been playing since this season's ladder started and I just found a Jah in a random Worldstone Keep lvl2 sarcophagus... It happens all the time. The drop rates in this game are honestly really decent if you get a good amount of magic find (I have around 300% right now and I find uniques constantly).
Magic find won't help with runes or runeword bases but, like folks have said, you can get really nice stuff and trade for what you want

You will need more than "a few shots." To get high runes, you "just" have to play a lot. A LOT.
In the case of Travincal that means several thousand runs, maybe 10,000+ runs. Look at Travincal's database entry for the amount of runs you need on average to drop specific runes with a specific chance.
So, fast kill speed is important. And never forget to have fun. Hunting for HR is still a hobby that is supposed to be fun (always!). It shouldn't be a chore.
I myself have found HR mostly in Terror Zones (better chance to drop HR), most notably Cows, WSK, Chaos and Tombs.
Finding runes yourself will be very dependent on your clear speed, and typically high level areas will be able to drop almost, of not, all of them. Terrorized zones guarantee this.
As others have pointed out, you could grind cows, Chaos Sanctuary and Travincal, but I found my high runes in TZ, or simply from a random monster. I've played since January 2026 on D2R, and I've found 1 Jah, 2 Sur's, Vexes and Ists, and just traded my uniques, keys and gems for more runes.

I find most joy in playing through Terror Zones because of the XP and the increased loot table, and I like the varying scenery, including places (like Act 3) I usually rarely go to. The Nova Sorc is my favourite for clear speed, and it's a very fun end-game build.

Some interesting related discussion here: What fuels the online item economy?
Gul is the highest rune you can get from Hellforge, btw
That's only one side. People still farm them, as i do. Keep on playing, HR will come sooner or later. I recommend Travincal runs with a horker to kind of force it. HR drops are by no means guaranteed, but doing 1000 runs (which is entirely possible within a month and the time of a casual player with family and real life) will most propably net you drops worth many of themBarmecide wrote: 1 day agoWell damn. OP
Yeah, that pretty much exactly sums up what I'm thinking. The relations in value here are somewhat perplexing to me, I feel like pgems are incredibly easy to find through sources like the funky Kurast chests, keys through their respective bosses especially the very farmable Countess, and various uniques and sets from just....MF and killing some bosses. But all of these things are somehow traded for runes that seem entirely unobtainable, even though if it's just bots farming for them, they could surely farm other things too.crocorinho wrote: 1 day agoSome interesting related discussion here: What fuels the online item economy?
It's an interesting topic, economics is something I've found very interesting in other games as well, since there really isn't any "natural order" to it and it kind of just follows patterns of psychology that are hard to decipher or predict at times.
Non Ladder is also highly inflated and many people are already staunchly sitting on Wealth. This seems to create an established economy of an existing supply (found) and demand (for making runewords, crafting, etc.).
Renewable resources are valuable because of the end-game gamble of crafting, and will typically be able to trade for the HR's that are netted by creating/finding those GG items.

I've never seen anyone talk about this, but don't you find the music in Terror Zones really bad? I guess everybody is playing while listening to something else. I definitely set the music volume to zero in TZ: it's always the same music, and to me it's the worst of the whole game. I'd like Blizzard to leave the default music of the zones instead.
I've been playing on and off for a couple years now and I've got 1 Jah, 1 Ber, 1 Ist, and 1 Mal. And that was it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
