Description
I played D2 classic as a kid for many years. I have tried to get back into it, but this time in LOD with d2r. I never was a fan of mercenaries and especially the idea of “oh, just let the merc kill it” for immunes. With sunder charms, I have hope.
I have tried a blizzard sorc, Fireball/ Meteor sorc, hammerdin, Mosaic assassin, summoner necro, CE necro, javazon, frost maiden and now an Echoing Strike warlock… the warlock has come closest to being what I want.
What I want: a character that can decimate every p8 TZ without having to worry about dying, potions, complicated strategies, so on and have good MF. I want a chill character. If a tesladin could wipeout p8, that’s what I’d be using
the Mosiac assassin had the damage, but you needed to beat the stupid cool off and that means constantly running around.. Baal runs? Good luck. My es warlock has 125fcr, max resists, but only 18-28k damage WITH fant and might. This makes p8 killing slow and boring … can I retool this character to work? Or maybe there is something easier
To add, I am using
Wizardspike (Pskull)
Shako with Um
Spirit shield
Trangs
Bul-Kathos
Raven Frost
Arachnid Mesh
War travellr
Annihilus
Torch
Gheeds
CTA and Phoenix on swap
I refuse to put any more than that in my inventory as this is a game to find items, not to Teleport to town every time you fill your cube. I have been tooling around with the idea of Obsession, but I’d need to get a FCR high res amulet to maintain the desired 125fcr

Can be used to make Runewords:

this guy :
HC RotW
Maybe FoH/ Smite Paladin with some seriously strong equipment? I have one level 93 in Hardcore, it doesn't really require deep thinking and is pretty strong against the majority of enemies, especially demons and undead. It deals magic damage against those, lightning damage against the rest and can still cause physical damage when needed.
You were used to Classic D2 and now you want an invincible build that annihilates P8 Terror zones without you doing anything?
That's some interesting expectation power creep.
I'm not sure if you can get happy in this game. D3 and D4 might better suit you (not meant as an insult but as a serious advice).
I have just one idea, though: You can get everything you described...in Nightmare

So...warlock then.
But yeah, the OP honestly kinda reads as "I just want something stupidly OP that I don't need to even bother getting charms for or anything".
Warlock definitely fits that bill in more builds than one.
Still wants an enigma to get around at least but beyond that, just cobble together random nonsense and still plow through p8 easily.
"Stupidly OP" I would immediatly throw in a Lightning Fury Javazon, it's an absolut cinema to clear the entire screen with just one Spear, I absolutely love it and yes it still is my most favorite build of any char in the game.
On top of that, the Javazon is a very good single target killer because of her Charged Strike, so she fullfills two rolls perfectly of throwing weapons of pure mass Destruction around and is still able to deal very high single target damage.
To be honest she is really gear heavy so building her up may take some time and effort.
Mosaic Assassin may be an option too, the combo is just nuts and may even outscale the LF Java by a significant margin.

Prayer A2 Merc with Insight/Cure
Energy Shield Nova Sorc
Blizzard MF Sorc
Summoner necro
As you see, what you ask for is what we in germany call an "Eierlegende Wollmilchsau, roughly translated to a wooly egg breeding milkpig, a fantastic animal providing everything. You can't have all you ask for on one char. I think the closest to what you're asking for is Energy Shield Nova sorc. I'm sorry to say that, but the stuff you got is not enough to build an effective one and without OP stuff like Griffons, 2x Soj and self-wield Infinity, it's imo not worth it building one.
But why not building an Echoing Strike warlock? Afaik, he's quiet effective even with mid stuff

OP
I have adjusted my ES warlock to Obsession / Phoenix, sighed Shako for tals, and I think this solves most of my issues. I’m still 20 short fcr. I added a Pride merc, not that I like the idea.
I think I need to get either a dual leech fcr ring and +2/10 ammy with res or +20 fcr/res Helm and I’d be happy. Honestly, the tals was the best thing on the new gear.. don’t need potions anymore.
I can put whatever gear on the character.. I’m sure it’s blasphemy, but I just buy the stuff because I don’t have the time to find it. Besides, how do you ever find shit if it takes good gear to find good gear? I was looking for an Eth Archon Staff and someone was asking for 10 Jah.. like, who finds that ever? I can’t play a video game 24/7
I may try a sorc, but I’m not sure it will be tanky enough. Can it kill Ubers? Going to test that on right now on the ES. I realize I’m looking for a “do all” character, and that’s difficult, but it shouldn’t be impossible to be able to play through every area with one character. Until sunder, sorc was simply unplayable IMO. It was a ridiculous concept to have to have different characters to farm different areas. TZs have made it so you really should be able to play the whole game, and that’s the fun part to me… I don’t want to do meph runs, or travel, or Andy.. I want to play the game, find items while doing it
I have a half ass javazon that I may gear out, but I’m not sure the Mf comes easily there
Edit: and I realize I should probably test this crap on single player with a hero editor before buying items that I end up discarding.

StoBeast wrote: 7 hours ago(...) how do you ever find shit if it takes good gear to find good gear?
It does not take good gear to find good gear. You are just faster with good gear and get more drops.
I think Meph and Andy runs qualify as "playing the game".StoBeast wrote: 7 hours agoI don’t want to do meph runs, or travel, or Andy.. I want to play the game
You did not talk about "play through every area." At least 20 builds can do that. You talked about destroying P8 TZ without effort.StoBeast wrote: 7 hours agoI realize I’m looking for a “do all” character, and that’s difficult, but it shouldn’t be impossible to be able to play through every area with one character.
Back then, hybrid builds existed. Not as fast as pure element Sunder builds, but they did reasonably well.StoBeast wrote: 7 hours agoUntil sunder, sorc was simply unplayable IMO. It was a ridiculous concept to have to have different characters to farm different areas.
What should we do with this information?StoBeast wrote: 7 hours agoEdit: and I realize I should probably test this crap on single player with a hero editor before buying items that I end up discarding.

Well, Insight sucks on ES build. Insight Cryptic Axe ( Eth) with conc, might 27-60k damage. Obsession Archon Staff (non Eth) 29-43k. And with that you get 30 more FCR, 60+ extra res, 4 skills 60fhr more life, more mana
Ubers were hard even with Crown of Ages w/ 2 ums so over 200++ res 85/80/75/75 w/ Phoenix. Cant understand really why Crown of Ages is recommended. Adds maybe 1-2k damage, gives little. Probably Um the tals for now. I returned to Obsession as the damage isn’t vastly different
So, this still isn’t it. I’m about 175$ in with this stupid ES build and I don’t think it’s worth it.

Correct, buying items for a PC game with real money is not worth it.
I have no more advice for you.
I have no more advice for you.
I would have to agree. My favorite character for the same reason. Can be stupidly expensive to min/max, but is very good at a reasonable price.Flipchart wrote: 1 day ago"Stupidly OP" I would immediatly throw in a Lightning Fury Javazon, it's an absolut cinema to clear the entire screen with just one Spear, I absolutely love it and yes it still is my most favorite build of any char in the game.

You want fun and challenge? SSF Single Player, any char is good for this. Pick the one suit you better for your game style.
There is one rule, above all others, for being a man. Whatever comes, face it on your feet.

I don't think there is an easy answer to the question you are posing since you have so many variables to consider.
Is there a reason why you are buying all these high ticket items as opposed to just using a hero editor and you can literally try out whatever you want? Are you actually playing in games that are P8 (with human players) or offline and just setting it to P8? If you are playing offline @ P8, buying items makes even less sense, to me, personally. I like the thrill of finding items and making trades to eventually get what I want, but that is me. Futhermore, if you buy all the items for a particular build, what is the reason of playing the game then?
I think your definition of playing the game is a bit different from the average persons. It sounds like you want to mop the floor with the game at the highest level (P8) and being all powerful is your idea of "playing" the game, which is certainly valid. That said, I think from an average players perspective the journey of taking a character from 0 to hero is playing the game. Finding upgrades, making trades, and of course eventually getting those god drops are what keep me coming back to this game personally. You start out, the game is difficult, and running is hard but as you get more and more items, it becomes a much smoother process. For me, that is the progress and much of why I still play the game. Every ladder presents a different outcome and journey as a player.
All that to say, I think the Warlock probably fits your listing of requirements better than any other class, mostly because the class is pretty over tuned right now. Most of their builds are really effective at running and you can essentially play the character anywhere. Many of them don't even need sunder charms/Infinity to be effective, which makes them less gear dependent than most other classes.
Every class is going to have its pros and cons regardless of what you choose. All of them will require a certain amount of gear as well to run at the level that you want them to.

OP
The way I have it in my head is that I will buy the standard items… cheap uniques and runewords and so on. I have a few mistakes, I should definitely have tested this first offline. However, 175$ isn’t going to break the bank so, oh well.
Right now, I’ve settled with 75fcr because I feel like can’t push 125 w/o paying hundreds of dollars for insane rare items. These are the ones I intend to find.
I am now running
Harlequin Crest ( Um) / Tal Rasha’s Horadric Crest ( Um)
Obsession Archon Staff / Phoenix Monarch
Call To Arms / Spirit
Enigma Mage Plate
Mara’s Kaleidoscope
Dracul’s Grasp
Raven Frost
Arachnid Mesh
War Traveler
6/4 dual leech ring with res and mana
My merc is
Pride Giant Thresher ( Eth)
Andariel’s Visage ( Eth)
Chains of Honor Archon Plate ( Eth)
I’m using an amp damage cold aura demon, and might on the merc. With just my damage, I do 22-33k, 38-56k with merc… but might takes a half a year to turn on. 3.6k life 760 mana 261 mf with Shako 73 to all res. If I put the tals on, I have some res at 80 and 85.
I can p1 everywhere without Battle Orders or a merc… I can p8 tz so far everywhere I can go. Ubers are rough. I think this is close to what I want and what I can look forward to is using this character to gear out other characters and I still want a lot of godly rares if I ever find the then ( Helm, ammy, ring) …at the end of that rainbow is 125fcr and max res
When I was a kid, I played d2 almost constantly and there was just no way to ever have the best of the best being a casual player that didn’t dupe and so on. I tried D2R about a year ago and had the same experience grinding like hell and dying doing Andy runs to come up empty handed. I don’t have a ton of time to play, I have a life and a job, so when I do play, I want to be able to enjoy it by not dying, and being able to be relaxed during play… right now, if my girlfriend comes in the room, I can easily clear the screen and just sit my character while we talk. That’s far more chill, and exactly what I want. I sometimes play this game from a chair, but mostly I play it in bed (adjustable base) with an 83 OLED and a legit surround sound system with 2 15 inch subs and so on. It’s more about relaxing and enjoying a game from my childhood in better quality than I ever had before than getting a 240hz monitor and min/maxing every damn thing. Same reason I refuse to use more than the unique charms… I want to be able to pick shit up casually. It seems like a lot of people enjoy the grind, and I do not. My highest ever leveled character is this one here at 91. Usually, I get bored by that time and start a new one. Terror zones have made the game actually fun and p8 is just necessary to feel rewarding with the drops
Not sure why I choose to play online. Probably because I used to play open battle net for a bit and it just turns into an Obsession of tweaking forever with hacked items. I’d probably do that in SP
