Though I did not play full season from first day to last, but as a casual player like myself who had more time than most likely most; there is no way to hit 99 as casual player
I really dont believe many people have the means to hit 99 legit ways and these days very little are actually legit 99 players.
I bet its magnificent to reach the 99 eventually if legit work.

Its not that hard to hit 99 with Terror zones now. You just have to play full games or /players8 single player. Much faster and easier than endless Baal runs

Sure if you have the chance of using players 8 its easy for sure. Im talking about players 1. I dont play in public games unless trading or rushing, why? because cant get loot of any kind in games with people. Dunno if people are using pickup scripts / macros or what but I never am able to pick anything in games with other people. The game says ping is 30-60 but it wont react that way. Once I had hr underneath my darn legs with nobody around, yet somehow someone else managed to pick it up before my clicking had registered at all to the game. This is why I avoid games with other people unless its with friends which I dont do anyway as none of my friends play this game D:
Online I have a level 91 Hydra Sorc and it takes ages o gain xp. I play solo with password games. Never played with anybody or traded anything.
I had a run yesterday with my Mosaic Sin with only +7 MF small charms on inventory (besides Gheed's Fortune, Anny, Torch and ID tome) on a Terror zone Cow level. It's insane how powerful she is compared to single target hitter barbarian. I'll go with her for a while to try to find the remaining items for Holy Grail.
P8 in singleplayer with Terror zones, yes that is very much believable to reach 99 in quite "fast". At times really feel like changing into singleplayer but I do like rushing people so no can do

…and I actually leveled to 99 this ladder season, hit 99 a week ago, my first ever (took a little over 2 months of the season). I reached 94, my previous highest, and then just… kept going? At some point I decided I may as well just keep going. Only played p8 sporadically (WSK TZ and Tombs TZ), mostly p3. It just takes longer doing it on lower player counts. I had forgot I made the post above but someone alerted me to it, so I felt had to make an update

I hope now you can understand what means 99 in exclusively "solo online," that is, I trade, of course , but play 99.99% of my time alone (I did a bit offline P8 to practice and experiment, not wise to do that in online HC, but no trade and possibility to copy all items without any mods, simply changing one file to read-only, kills all the fun) .
Now nearing 99 to my 2nd char (98.59 atm - it goes like 1% of the last level per day). And it is HC.
I even have two 77 (lol) chars on HC Classic (now that is a special voyage, it deserves an epic essay of massive masohistic proportions).
But in Classic I have a help from my friend Atari, while in LoD my P2 play (never did any bigger group) makes less than 0.01% (more like a demonstration to a few friends, like, "look this silly build").
Anyway, it is important to ENJOY THE GAME, so never did and will never do some horrible runs on P8 that kills all fun of the game.
It must be hard and slow, although some of this borders to extremely hard, like Java in Classic, and that's something we should avoid - it kills the game from other spectrum.
To add a sugar, I have regular disconnect every day, only once per day, but constantly changes the hours. It makes all of this HHC, lol.

25 december 2025, what a day to celebrate another character that reaches Level 99. This time is Storm's sister, Khaleea. She's a very skillful archer that wipes down the enemies with her Faith bow.
It started a little slow before she could use the Strafe skill but after that all went a lot more smooth. And finally at level 65 when Faith came in on a +3 skill Grand Matron Bow she was a steam roller.
For the physical immune ones she uses Magic Arrow.
She is the first character that doesn't use Enigma. Instead she wears a Chains of Honor for max resists.
The Normal was finished at level 48, Nightmare at 74 and Hell at 90.
Her journey took 221 hours from 14 october until 25 december 2025 and the last level took 53 hours.
The finish was a bit delayed by her 8 deaths, 3 of them on level 98, grrr... (it happened on level 95, 96, 97 and 98).
I used the same XP shrine tactic but was a little harder to run to them. Here, Enigma was a miss but I survived without it.

Today, 8th of February 2026, we celebrate Nova Queen, Krisa' sister. She is a very fast and powerful sorceress that bring havoc among the Sanctuary's enemies.
She is a Nova Sorc using Energy Shield as a main protection and Static Field for lowering enemies health. Very fast teleporter, zapping the whole map in seconds in search of XP shrines for a fast leveling. This was the main gameplay, except for Chaos Sanctuary when you get instantly cursed.
I used to self wield the Infinityscythe over the Crescent Moon Runeword and Spirit like was on Maxroll guide. The rest of the items were almost the same as those in the guide.
It took 134 hours to reach level 99 in less than a month, with 15 deaths. Early deaths were on a "bad" points allocation - max Energy Shield first instead of Telekinesis - and the last two due to silly mistakes.
I forgot to cast Energy Shield when I started the level. First time (14th Death) when I went to the Cairn Stones to enter Tristram but Rakanishu had another opinion and one-shoted me. The second one (last one, when I was at level 98 and 85%, grrrr... ) when I was in World Stone Keep, going for Ball, a pack of Vipers speared me to the Ground.
Normal was finished at level 48, Nightmare at 76 and Hell at 90, after 46 hours. The rest was on Terror Zones for 88 hours.
Sadly, no items for the Holy Grail from Nova Queen. Only three items remaining makes the task very difficult to complete. She found 73,6 % of all items but not any of the the last three.
I took notes of all items dropped and here are some statistics:
Unique - 265 items - 850 total - The most found: Cold Rupture Sunder Charm 45 times and The Jade Tan Do 12 times.
Sets - 108 items - 660 total - The most found: Cathan's Seal 51 times.
Runes - 28 items - 948 total - The most found: Ort 107 times.
first time ever I got a 90+ character, because I used to get bored and leave the game for something else, my sorc is 98 with 24% XP, but got burned out of diablo 2, started playing something else, and only play like an hour of D2 a day lol.
