Hotkeys on spells from item charges

So I noticed today that when I quit the game entirely, my hotkey for

Oak Sage disappears. I get it from charges on a HOTO. I looked it up, and apparently this is intended behavior, so that's fine, but then I remembered I had another character with charges of

Spirit of Barbs (from Bramble) that I use, and his hotkey does NOT get reset, ever. What gives?

Is hotkey for

Oak Sage on F9-12 and not

Spirit of Barbs ?

Hotkey for Oak is F5, Barbs is F11 (different characters of course)

I always have this problem with

Teleport charges while leveling...
Don't know why it happens, buy sometimes the hot

Key is lost...
I think that die increase the chance of this to happen (or maybe always happen when you die... )

Teleport charges loses the hotkey if you use them all, that happens to me all the time xD

I did some quick/basic testing with this. I have a sorc wielding Heart of the Oak, and I bound

Oak Sage charges to a hotkey.

First - I spent all charges. When I recharged in the same game, the hotkey still worked.
Then - I spent all charges and saved & exited the game. I made a new game, then I recharged the HotO and... the hotkey still worked.
Next - I spent all charges, then saved & exited, and closed the game entirely. I booted the game again, made a new game, recharged the HotO and... the hotkey still worked. I even hit the hotkey ingame before recharging and it still worked after recharging.

Then I tried removing the HotO (putting it into my cube).
When I re-equipped it in the same game the hotkey still worked.
However, if I saved & exited before re-equipping the HotO, the hotkey did not work anymore (didn't need to close the game).

Conclusion - what triggers the hotkey being cleared is if the item granting the charges is not equipped at the time you save & exit. For most people this would probably be if they die and they save & exit to collect their corpse in town - that would cause the charged skill hotkey to be forgotten, as the item is not equipped at the time you save & exit.

It's possible there are other causes as well, like bugs, etc, that I'm not aware of.

There must be another cause because in my testing I loaded the game, set the hotkey, S+Q, quit D2R, reloaded, and it was gone. If I leave the game to the lobby or main menu, the hotkey will remain, however. It only gets erased if I quit the program. And only with HotO Oak, not with the Bramble

Spirit of Barbs. I am a Druid for what that's worth. I have since put a hard point in

Oak Sage to remove the annoyance xD

I feel maybe the amp charges from

The Gavel Of Pain does the same thing for my gf find barb. If I have the weapon on swap when I leave the game, it'll clear the hotkey for amp. However, if I leave the game with my dual Ali baba, the hotkey remains. So now I make it an effort to always exit the game with Ali babas instead of the gavel.

Maybe if u die and leave the game, then the charges arent on the Hotkey anymore cause its unequipped after u leave the game.

Key ANYMORE. So glad Im not playing hardcore :'D

As long as you equip the items (collect your body without leaving in case you died) in the same game, the hotkey should remain bound. As far as my testing showed in my earlier post, it is the leaving the game with the item unequipped which triggers it, not the unequipping/dying by itself. Unless there’s a bug or some additional factor that causes the hotkey to be lost.
