Weird question: has anyone tested the interaction between
Zeal
(available as an oskill via Passion) and Martial Arts charge-up skills such as
Phoenix Strike
? Does it expend charges? Is there a to-hit check?

Even if it does work in the ways one would hope, I don't think it's particularly optimal, since
Dragon Talon
already exists, but I was just curious if anyone has tried it.

According to Amazon Basin, only normal melee attacks and dragon finishing skills release charges (so, not Zeal):
  • Charge bonuses do not apply until released using one of the following finishing skills:
    • Normal melee Attack
    • Dragon Talon
    • Dragon Claw
    • Dragon Tail
    • Dragon Flight

The same info is listed on the articles for Phoenix Strike, Claws of Thunder, Blades of Ice, Fists of Fire, Tiger Strike and Cobra Strike.

All trades are Switch only :)

Thank you 2.4 for making all of my wildest dreams come true!

I guess you either need a finishing move or a normal attack to cast charges. You are able to chargen but cannot use
Zeal
to release?

So
Zeal
is not considered real melee hm? its more of a, ability? not quite spell but not quite true melee either, some abomination between the two.

Zeal
is considered melee, it's just not the normal melee attack, like it says. The charges are designed around the assassin's own skills, and the only non-skill attack that will release them is the normal melee attack, the one all characters have (the default for left click button) that just swings your weapon at the enemy without any special effect (or mana cost).

There is one more, according to skills.txt: Left Hand Swing - off-hand attacks are also finishing skills.
I wonder how would it work with
Double Swing
or
Frenzy
, which, according to The Phrozen Keep, both use Left Hand Swing internally.

Well, neither of those skills exist as an oskill or as a charged item affix, making it a mostly theoretical question. I guess one could mod an item to supply either as an oskill and test it.

Could
Zeal
be used to build charges?

I am permanently no longer accepting
Ort
or
Thul
runes as trade currency

No, you need to attack with the charge skill itself to build its charges. I.e. to build charges for
Phoenix Strike
, you need to actually bind
Phoenix Strike
to left/right click (or a key) and use that to attack - each successful hit adds a charge.
