Yes well that is obvious, but I had no idea the ethereal has lower requirement in attribute(s). Thats cool if it has been since original because ive never heard of it before.

Ist Rune and 1 Socket Quest on Ladder where I do not own very much anyway

The max number of sockets depend on the item ilvl (generally the level of the monster or the clickable that dropped it)
In the case of

Wolf Head it need ilvl 26+ to have 3 sockets...

And as far as I know, it is not possible to know the item ilvl...

So buying normal or exceptional unsocket items is always a risk when they have variable max sockets depending on the ilvl...
(Buy or use a self dropped that you don't remember where it dropped...)

Elite items are not that a big issue as in normal situations items will not drop from monsters/clickable with level lower than its quality level, and all elite item have qlvl higher than the ilvl necessary for the higher max sockets.

But... still has a chance of a item being the result of the the

Recipe: Normal Quality Armor of Same Type or

Recipe: Normal Quality Weapon of Same Type, in this case it would have ilvl 1
But it is not a possibility if:
Item is superior
or item is ethereal
or item has staff mods or auto mods with high min required level.

The ilvl is too low to get 3 Sockets. It would always roll with 2. Comes from

Tristram in normal mode maybe.
Same with Barb Helmets with

Howl

Bash or

Blade Mastery /

Axe Mastery.

I only one time dropped an

Assault Helmet with some Low skills and 3 Sockets.

Least I dropped a

Sacred Feathers with +2

Feral Rage and 3 Sockets. Non-Ladder.
But you could look for this similar.
