Hi

I was moving a Gem from my inventory to my shared stash the exactly moment when the game was closed because of a server shutdown for maintenance....

When I started a new game, I was expecting that the Gem would be "in hold" as normally happens if you exit and restart a game with a item "in hold" ("floating" in the center of the screen waiting for you to put it on ground/stash/inventory/cube...), but it did not happen... my gem was not anywhere (inventory/stashes) 🙁

Thanks I lost just a Flawed gem... 🤞🤞

In the future, I will not try to move my items when the server is about to be shutdown for maintenance...

Did this already happen to you?

Never happened to me, but I wouldn't dare move any item while seeing a maintenance message. Thankfully for you it was only a flawed gem.

This is why they keep doing the message ~Server will shut down in X minutes for maintenance, starting 15 minutes before it happens and then repeating it every 1-2 minutes.

Just be happy you were not moving around something actually valuable.

I usually quit the game the first time I see this message - especially when it coincides with or follows the message "
Terror
is about to be unleashed upon Sanctuary" 😉

*lol*
Definitely a smart move yeah.

On PC, in single player, game crashed and exit to desktop.
I was in Act IV for about two minutes and before that I was on Act III.
When I entered the game again it loaded earlier data. I was on Act III and had on my cube one pair of gloves that I discarded before changing acts.
It restored items and location about two minute earlier before that crash.

I actually remember one situation where I was AFK and after a few minutes when I came back DClone arrived with the message that the server is going down in 1 minute 😁 I guess I just collected the Anni in the last 5-10 seconds or so before the server finally went down 😉

Nice PSA. Good thing it was just a gem piece. If you *know* the server is going down, definitely halt what youre doing or start wrapping things up and don't move anything valuable.
Reminds me of when I had a Dclone spawn and immediately I had a notice of Realm closing in 15 mins, so on my barb I got him in 5

Funny thing is they stropped showing the message to me after the 12 minute mark

Did you make a new game after the 12 minute mark? The server restarts (which is what the "realm going down" messages usually mean) don't affect all servers on the entire region at once, just a subset of the servers (though if they do plan to restart all servers then they will do so one subset at a time). When you make a new game you get automatically assigned to a server that is not scheduled for restart, so if you leave a game that is showing the realm going down messages to make a new game, the new game will not receive those messages (at least not until that server is flagged for restart, but that should be some time later).

If you didn't make a new game after the 12 minute mark, ie you stayed in the same game the whole time, that sounds like a chat bug. Classic 👌

OP
I made a new game just after being kicked off the game...
I was expecting the game saying that server was unreachable (or something like that)... but a new game was created (without my item "in hold" 🙁)

That's because, like I said, it's not the whole region going down. The messages are misleading, it's not the whole realm, just groups of servers being restarted, while the rest remain up. Whenever you create a new game, the new game instance is assigned to a server which is not flagged for restarting. Thus, whenever you see the realm going down message, you can always immediately just make a new game and you won't see the message in the new game cause the restart will not affect the new game instance.

The only exceptions are, that I can think of, (1) on ladder right before a ladder reset (then all ladder games are obviously going down for the impending reset), and (2) during the 22 Nights of
Terror
(Blizzard used the "realm going down" feature to force everyone to make a new game within 30 minutes from the bonus/event change each day).

Though, your item should have been attached to your cursor still. The cursor effectively works like an extra inventory slot. It might have been some kind of save/sync issue with the restart and the timing of you picking up the item, like perhaps you picked it up so shortly before the restart that the change wasn't saved. The item should then still have been in the place where you picked it up from, at least if you picked it up from inventory/stash/cube, but if you picked it up from the ground, then yeah, I can see that there's a risk of it being lost. I.e., the server considered it to still be on the ground when the game closed. But it sounds like you did pick it up from inventory, so it should have at the very least still been in your inventory. Unless you dropped it on the ground in between for some reason?
