Google brought me to this horrible place I barely escaped from, but one of the kinder denizens told me this:
"just don't get hit by melee attacks. Spells like fireballs, and ranged attacks like archers don't cause durability loss. Only getting hit by melee attacks do. And then every time you get struck by a melee attack, there's 10% chance you lose 1 point of durability from a random item, if you've got every slot filled its a 20% chance of being your hat, so on average you lose 1 hat durability for every 50 melee attacks that hit you. Only successful attacks reduce durability, if you have more defense you'll take less durability loss. But Energy Shield won't do anything to mitigate it, you lose durability regardless of amount of damage taken, just number of attacks."
The wording on Maxroll about durability says "on hit", as well.
"When struck by a Melee attack, there is a 10% chance that any piece of Armor (including Shields) equipped may reduce their Durability by 1."
So it would seem that the chance to lose durability is still there, regardless to if you take damage or not, if from a melee hit. That maxroll article has a lot of very interesting info about durability loss, which piece of armor takes the hit and repair cost. Very cool

Thanks for understanding.
