I used to play a long time ago. . .back in the early/mid 2000's during the 1.08, 1.09 and 1.10 patches. Just came back recently right before the RotW expansion. Ironically, I didn't even know about it so I came back totally on a whim, unrelated to that. Maybe not even a week before.
I have to say, the Diablo community now seems so chill, helpful, and nice. Just trading with people from here, I've ended up chatting with and befriending a few people. Some of them even gave me a bunch of stuff to help me out (I didn't even ask), which ended up really helping a lot. People are even trusting enough to just drop stuff on the Ground to trade too.
I have to say, it's a welcome surprise. Everyone, and I mean everyone who used to play this game was so sinister, lol. It was a wretched hive of scum and villainy where almost everyone was trying to scam or rip off everyone else. I remember so many "Diablo scams". I'm sure I'm not the only one with stories about it, lmao. Luckily, I was never scammed, but almost every friend I had who played was.
Anyway, it's been nice coming back. Everyone here, at least the ones using this website and trading I suppose, have been really nice people. Not even stingy with trades. Most people just accept whatever as long as it's somewhat reasonable, so I try to be generous when I offer).
I just wanted to throw this comment out into the Void in case anyone enjoys hearing about it. Thanks for being such good people.

Can be used to make Runewords:

We all grew up from being asshole teenagers
If you don't have my asking price, make me an offer. It's only a game.
Will accept any 2 Keys when my asking price is an Ist.

Don't worry, i'm still the same old ass wipe.

I've gotten back into AoE2 a few years ago and I noticed that (vast majority of) the active community was helpful, friendly and, in general, nice. I would encounter jerkasses during random team games but people who participated in communication, theorycrafting, discussion, etc., were understanding and accommodating. I would have put AoE2's current community as one of the most approachable.
Both Diablo 2 and AoE2 are from the early 00s. I think we are just older and more mature now and don't have either the time or the energy to be assholes online.

Not everybody was an asshole teenager. Some of us watched asshole teenagers get away with what they are and never wanting to be like them none the less.
Overall, the player base is older and nicer than 25 years ago but still be careful, especially if you have some expensive stuff.
When I tried to sell my 15ed 775 MP Enigma, I encountered numerous people who wanted me to "link" it, well they all told me the keys to drop it...Did not fall for it, of course.
There are still lots of scammers out there.

True.
And we certainly have an unusually positive community here (love you all!).
But even in-game, the scammers and aholes seem to be a LOT less than back in the day. Yes, they're still there. And yes, they still try to screw you out of your gear with the same old tricks. But the share of them vs. people who are actually nice and friendly and helpful has shifted massively from the olden days.
Interestingly, that's basically the exact opposite of my experience in pretty much any other, more modern game as people in those are by and large infinitely more toxic than they've ever been in D2.
I suppose there is something to be said for an on average older and more mature audience.

It's pretty cool how a lot of you played back then too. I remember trading anni charms using that Stone wall near Akara in act 1, then equipping a bunch of faster run/walk gear after agreeing to trade and running back to grab your stuff when they were halfway around because you could also snipe their charm faster than them. I remember the, "I'm gonna move it around the trade screen to prove it's not fake" then pulling a switcheroo with another item that looks the same right before clicking trade. Or the more clever one which is to "sort them" more cleanly in a multi-item trade and doing the switcheroo then. Lots of bad stuff, lol.
Glad to hear you saw through it!
This is definitely the first positive community experience I've seen on a Blizzard game though, I'll say that much. XD
Interesting scam attempt. I guess at least I think I would have been able to figure that one out. Most of those scams always came off to me as "low IQ scams", because even back in the day I never fell for them, but I always felt really bad for people who did get scammed. Knew so many people who did. Thinking back, when you realize most of the people getting scammed for kids, it kind of hits a little harder because they were probably really upset about it.mikelessar wrote: 2 days agoOverall, the player base is older and nicer than 25 years ago but still be careful, especially if you have some expensive stuff.

The last game I came off of was actually pretty nice too; FFXIV, at least when it comes to scamming. At least, so long as you never gave any most of them access to your guild stash. Definitely quite a bit of emotional instability from the community there when it comes to socializing though. A trend I've noticed on most MMORPGs though, haha. Most of them were nice though.Schnorki wrote: 2 days agoTrue.

In the digital world, it is easy to be friendly. In the analogue world, not so much.
Oddly I find the inverse much truer.lscottl wrote: 2 days agoIn the digital world, it is easy to be friendly. In the analogue world, not so much.
What ever you do, avoid the Blizzard forums for this game at all cost. Think about the worst part of town, whether the mephheads openly deal, where guns are going off in the background nightly. That part of town is still more sane than Blizzard's forums.
They were a trash heap 20 years ago, and now are actually worse.

What I mean is that there is no skin in the game in the digital world. It easy for me to be nice to you, or conversely, a jackass to you in the digital world. The insults and kindness get lost in an ocean of 1s and 0s.
In the real world, there are real and immediate consequences for one's behavior and action. so one has be on their toes when interacting.
OP
Interesting. So maybe it's just the people on this website that are so nice then? Everyone I've met since coming back have been people from here.sbn wrote: 1 day agoWhat ever you do, avoid the Blizzard forums for this game at all cost. I think it's because the only real reason to go to the official forum is to be angry at Blizzard. If you have only angry and displeased people around, it's going to be an angry and displeasing place.AlphaJackal wrote: 8 hours agoInteresting. That's a really good point. Sort of like social media, in that sense.hyeonsestoast wrote: 8 hours agoI think it's because the only real reason to go to the official forum is to be angry at Blizzard. I'd say that the community now is... silent.
I remember the days when BN chat was full. It was split into channels by language, and if a channel was full, you were added to one with a higher number (like "pol-1" -> "pol-2"). Sometimes channels had two digit numbers, like "pol-10". And the chat really felt alive. It was mostly spamming trades (by players, not bots), but there were some occasional meaningful discussions there.
Same in the games. Besides mandatory "pp", players were also chatting there.
Now?
Chat? Empty.
Games? Silent. Spamming "pp" is not needed anymore, but you rarely get a hearty "hi". Even basic co-ordination ("my tp") is rare now; everyone seems to be busy with own business, like other players were NPCs.
And speaking of scamming, it's gone because most scamming exploits are long gone. You no longer need to drop Annihilus in order to trade it, and TPPK is likely fixed as well. Alternatively (or supplementally) old cheating tools do not work with D2R.
I definitely wouldn't say the community is more mature. Cheating is still rampant, just slightly less visible. And enter any Baalrun game. Somehow just before Baal dies everyone switch to a melee build...
