How do you organize your stuff? On bank chars? Any best practices?

Description

Hello community,

today, I wanna raise a topic, in which I repeatedly have a crisis ;-) It's about "how to organize my stuff on bank chars".

Although, Blizzard has made our lives much easier with the newly add-on and many “quality of life changes” for collecting, sorting an stacking items, I am always thinking about how to optimize all the other stuff I have collected so far.

I have a total of 20 characters, about half of which I actively play. The other half are just bank chars, where I store items that I may need later - e.g. bases, charms, gems, ...

Currently, I have organized myself as follows
- class specific items are usually stored at the same class chars
- not class specific items are stored on my bank chars, grouped by charms, bases, bases with runewords and uniques, which are additionally grouped by item type
- the shared stash is full of temporary loot and items, that I need in certain situations and want to be able to access quickly

It's okay, but.. when I trade anything, sometimes I have to switch between a dozen characters before I find the right one.

Therefore I am interested in what is your way of organizing your items?

my organization is TERRIBLE.
i have 2 set mules
2 "base/runeword" mules
and the rest is pure YOLO lol. I started off with like a mule paladin for paladin gear, etc but that fell apart very fast. now it's just "take 20 minutes to try and find that one pair of frostburns you found and decided to keep like a month ago"

Now with the new stash tabs I need fewer mules:
1 for high runewords, 1 for helmets and body armor, 1 for gloves and
Boots
, 1 for items that 1 wanna sell, 1 for MF items, 1 for bases. In the past, when space was rarer, I even leveld my mules to at least level 70 so that they store some items on their bodies. The rest of the (class-specific) items are on chars that I actually play or have played.

shared stash:
1 tab for rings, amus, torches, annis etc.
1 tab for charms and jewels
1 tab for items I want to sell
1 tab for items I want to drop in a free game

I've got a handful of mules but I name them with what they contain. All my mules are barbs so makes it easier to find a mule in the character list. The mules contain that item type regardless of class specific or rarity (craft, magic, rare, set, unique) except for bases. These mules hold gear for selling:
  • Armor
  • Weapons
  • Bases Armor
  • Bases Weapons
  • Jewelery
  • Charms
I then have a couple of mules for gear I use/want to use myself
  • LvlUp
  • EndGame
My play characters only store gear they use for themselves. They do not store stuff for selling or for other characters to use.

I use shared stash stabs to hold my:
  • Crafting Materials
  • Items I found that need to be listed and sorted to mules
  • Items that need sockets (either cube or lazurk)

I can trade DLC or non-DLC on both PC or xbox.

All my
Blood Ring
and
Caster Amulet
priced at
Ist
or below are now FREE.

Very similar to what @Knappogue said, but I'll add mine here, too.
  • My characters only carry the gear they use. If I plan to level a new character, I will create it and transfer any potential gear to them while they're level 1.
  • All of my mules are assassins. I don't really play assassin, paladin, or sorceress, so it could be any of them, but for some reason the first one I ever made was an assassin and it stuck.
  • I name them for what they contain, but my categories are different: low level and high level uniques, low level and high level sets, low runes and high runes (these are less relevant now), jewels, charms, bases (just armor/weapons), sales (a single mule that carries whatever I'm currently selling: this probably only works because I don't buy items, only sell for runes, pgems, and keys), rare
    Boots
, rare belts, rare jewelry, and then I have one of each class for class-specific items (mostly to store and forget items for classes I don't play).
  • I usually have a sunder charms character for the sunder give aways. Unfortunately, I recently lost a bunch of these (25+).
Should be noted that I'm quite a pack rat, so I have a whole second account basically just to store stuff.

I only play softcore, non-ladder.

Yolo mess "I will clean it someday, but that is just a lie, haha" style for me.

In fact. It was easier and faster to learn about double instances of d2 and buy second account than to try to organize this Chaos. Now I can lie to myself that it's ok, because I swept the dirt under the carpet.

I have separate mules for bases, merc gear, leveling gear, sets, and useful random gear. Also one for charms, and one for random stuff like rare rings, jewels, etc. Then one more for my trade listings. I keep new stuff in shared to be sorted later, as well as stuff I might use soon. One shared page is for
Gheed
's, annis, torches, etc. I also keep a few rerollable grand charms and diadems in that tab.

I used to have mules for runes and gems too (like 4 of them), but no longer necessary! (at least for now lol)

All trades are negotiable within reason :)

My way is a bit OCD, because I'm trying to do the Grail - I don't encourage you to do this, I'm doing it this way only because I'm a bit of a completionist/perfectionist... and masochist. Don't try this at home :)

I've got 13 mules - 3 for sets, and 10 for all the uniques sorted from the lowest level to the highest, so that 4th mule has items from lvls 1-14, 5th - 15-22, and so on. I'm trying to pack the items as tightly as possible, but not so that I have items from one level separated on two mules (at least for now - if in the end It'll allow me to get rid of a mule, maybe I'll do it, because I'm playing online, so limited character slots).

I'm also successfully leveling them to get to at least the Cube, so I have a bit more inventory space, and recently - all the way to the level of the items they're currently carrying, so they can wear it (even more space in the inventory). They're all barbs, because they can carry two one-hand weapons, which sometimes can take a lot of space (
The Grandfather
,
The Patriarch
etc.). Warlock in some cases would be pretty good too, because he uniquely can carry two-handed weapons and a shield.

Other than that, I'm a pretty normal, sane person :D I've got separate mules for low lvl starting items, open socket items and charms, and keep the rest of the useful staff in the inventory of my endgame characters. I've made an spreadsheet to keep track of everything - green items are perfect, reds aren't, because I figured that I'll drop multiples of many items before I'll get my
Tyrael's Might
, so I may as well hunt for perfect rolls along the way.

I'm a hoarder, too. But I'm on the "free" side of the game, meaning I play offline and I don' have the "only-26-chars" problem.
I have 251 characters in total. 9 heroes and the rest for mules.
I have this:
  • Sets 1 to 4 for all the sets on the game (I think I need another one with the new sets added on RotW).
  • Unique for every type (swords one hand, two hands, gloves, helmets, etc) and for their ethereal version.
  • Jewelry mule (rings and amulets).
  • Rainbow facets (they used to stay on the Jewelry page but I found many of them and I made them a dedicated mule)
  • Sunder charms - all perfect ones and antiperfect with every design (except for the
    Black Cleft
, only o few points from perfect and anti)
  • Small charms with Magic find, resistances, damage, etc, each with their mule
  • Bases - here are many variants (some of them are, for example
    Phase Blade
    - one mule for every open socket type, 2OS, 3OS, 4OS, etc)
  • Runes - 22 mules for
    El
    to
    Um
and one mule for hi runes (
    Mal
    -
    Zod
). Still have to find that F'ing
    Zod
  • Class specific items - dedicated mule for every class
  • Skillers - every class with at least 10 skillers for every tree
  • Gems - every perfect gem has it's own mule with 140 pieces (for the low level gems I have only one mule with only 3 items for each typ (chipped, flawed, normal, flawless)
  • Doubles - 7 mules with double items. Very hard or handy items I have several pieces (
    Shako
    , Arachnid, Andy's, etc)
  • Keys - one mule
  • Essences - 2 mules (one for blues, 140 items and one for the rest of them, including the 30 Tokens)
  • Torches - I kept all the 45 torches I got and made on mule for every piece - not including the Warlock - I'm at level 85 right now.

I started with "thematic mules" like some other guys, too. But it shortly became a pain because I ran out of space on one mule and had plenty of it on another one etc. Here is what I have ended up with (have recently reworked everything).

My Account apart from playing Chars:
  • MULE_I, MULE_II, MULE_III - well, you get the idea 😉 (they include Spirit and Insight reroll, starter stuff, bases with and without ready to go runewords, charms, free stuff etc.)
  • TRADER_I - III (everything on sale)
  • RUNE_BANK (at least 4 pieces of every rune)
  • Jah_I, Ber_I etc. (for mid and high runes which stay in the expansion for now)
Accounts of Sons and Daughter apart from playing Chars:
  • Felix: FooMULE_I, FooMULE_II etc.
  • Joshua: JooMULE_I etc.
  • Liara: LooMULE_I etc.
I keep everything in a textfile and use Notepad++ with simple text search to find my items. I am currently planning to move to Obsidian with markdown files.
I also have a system of abbreviations to saerch for spefic pre- and affixes etc. Here is an example:

4x
Phase Blade
, 6OS
2x
Phase Blade
, 3OS
1x
Phase Blade
, 3OS/SUP(11ED/2TAR)
3x
Phase Blade
, 4OS
3x
Phase Blade
, 5OS + 3x Grief Runes
1x
Phase Blade
, 0OS/SUP(13ED)

After a 20 year break from D2 I started playing D2R in 2024 with my sons (9 and 10 years old)
Time Zone: UTC/GMT +1/+2 (Germany)
Online workdays: casually from 07:00-09:00 pm

As an engineer who constantly uses excel sheets for everything, this pleases me.
I do something similar, but I've been too busy/lazy to get it properly organized like this.
