I've done it many times, as junk drops way more often than something useable or tradeable in open market. 3K of in-game Gold apiece is a pretty good deal.

Never a Torch (I didn't have any then), but I once sold a Sunder charm while gambling... that's how I learned to be extra cautious lol (and now I do have some Torches! Finally got to Smite some Uber demons for the first time ever, yesterday, yay!).
On a similar note, I've also lost a +4/-4 Fire Rainbow Facet Jewel while crafting Blood Gloves. Transmuted into oblivion. It took me a while to realize what I had done!

I only did this with a nice fire res SC once. But torches, annis and above all - Gheeds - are common candidates for those "misfortunes"

Never vendored a torch but I just vendored Tyrael's Might by accident last week... rip. Yeah, kinda not happy about that one.
