Is Attack Rating really this broken?

I've been working on an off-meta build and just realized something today...

Mist runeword in a

Diamond Bow only gives 10% bonus to attack rating, not 20%.

If my math is correct, 6178 base X 1.2 (120%) should be 7413. When equipped I'm only getting 6795 base!

This is a build that I have to focus heavily on AR and losing 10% is a pretty big deal I feel...

The AR% bonus on the weapon works additively with any bonus you get from your skills (most attack skills grant some AR%, some classes have passive AR% bonuses, like Amazon via

Penetrate and Barbarian via weapon masteries, etc). Have you accounted for that?

my multizon was built with tons of health and str/dex just to equip gear, had like 7k AR, reseted her and maxed attack rating pasive and gave her Obedience alt weapon and left vitality at 100 and the rest went to dexterity, now she goes around with 15.5k attack rating and I can notice how everything dies faster besides the extra base damage it means more

Arrows hit instead of missing and flying into the void lol.

I set my skill to Normal Attack to take all of that out of the equation and it is a 10% bump between having the bow equipped and not equipped.

The "additive" point is exactly how percentages work in my head, and why you have to multiply by 1.2, which is the equivalent of 120%.

Try removing the item (put in stash) restart game and reequip
I've had a few items glitch and not add bonuses the rune words were listing by re equipping the game recalculates it's knocked it loose for a couple things.

What's your other gear besides Mist? Do you have any AR% bonuses on any other items?

And, I'm assuming you're an Amazon? If so, what's your

For this item, you have to test it with all other equip remove. I think you probably have something add AR. That mix up your calculation.

The %AR , as I remember , is very bad attribute, unable to compare +fix AR.
Fix AR have some add up (multiple) with other things.

I stripped all gear giving any additional AR (

Raven Frost and random charms) and the bow still only give 10%. 4520 to 4972

I am a Ranger Paladin. Both attacks are set to normal attack so nothing should be adding more AR.

I've now double checked this with an Amazon character that I have, with a Mist

Grand Matron Bow that I had laying about, and she does receive 20% attack rating from Mist, not 10%. Looks to me like it's working correctly.

I have a level 88 self-wield Infinity

Lightning Strike Amazon. She has 1 hard point in

Penetrate (the passive skill that grants +X% to Attack Rating, not

Pierce that I kept writing in my posts above for some reason). She has a 16/14

Hellfire Torch, a 19/19

Annihilus, a total of +12 to Dexterity from other charms, and 80 hard points invested in Dexterity (on top of the base 25), giving her a total of 152 Dexterity, which coincidentally is exactly the requirement for a

Grand Matron Bow. With

Hellfire Torch and

Annihilus, her

Penetrate skill level is 5, which grants a passive bonus of +75% to Attack Rating. Equipping Mist raises this to level 8 (+3 to All Skill Levels) which grants +105% to Attack Rating.

Her attack rating without anything equipped besides charms (which she needs to meet the requirements for the

Grand Matron Bow) is 1277. This includes the +75% bonus from

Penetrate, so her base Attack Rating is 730 (730 * 1.75= 1277.5).

When she equips the Mist

Grand Matron Bow, her Attack Rating jumps to 1642. Dividing this by the base attack rating of 730 yields 2.25, which means she has a total attack rating bonus of +125%.

Penetrate is at level 8 with Mist equipped and grants +105%, which leaves 20% which is exactly the bonus on the Mist itself.

tl;dr - my Amazon gets the full 20% bonus from Mist

If you want me to try to investigate further, could you create a maxroll planner link with your character with all of the equipment and skills? I did the same for my Amazon and everything matched up exactly with that I saw in-game.

It just occurred to me - do you have an aura active? Some auras grant a bonus to attack rating -

Blessed Aim and

Fanaticism, specifically.

Blessed Aim even grants a passive bonus to attack rating that you benefit from even when the aura itself isn't active.

Yes, the numbers add up if we assume he has 20 hard points in

Blessed Aim. It grants a passive bonus of +5% for each hard point, so with 20 hard points that's +100%. It also adds up if he has level 12

Fanaticism active (+95%) with 1 hard point in

Blessed Aim (+5%).

4520 divided by 2 (since it's +100%) is 2260, so his base attack rating is 2260.

Then with the Mist equipped, the bonus is +120%, and 2260 * 2.2 = 4972, which matches what he's seeing in-game.

Can you confirm that you have 20 hard points in

Blessed Aim, @Hineythegreat, or level 12

Fanaticism active?

Blessed Aim is at 20 hard points, with 40 total with all gear on.

When I checked these numbers I did not have Fanatacism active, or

Blessed Aim. I do know that

Blessed Aim has the passive bonus as well.

So the issue is that the 20% AR bonus from the Mist bow is only added onto my base AR (less the 100% bonus from

Blessed Aim) and not added WITH the

Blessed Aim bonus?

Yes, this is what I meant in my first reply when I said that AR% from gear is additive with AR% from skills. You sum the AR% from all sources before multiplying it with the base AR.

The game works the same way for many other %-based effects too -

- you sum all off-weapon Enhanced Damage % (whether from skills or non-weapon gear, also negative effects like from

Weaken curse) before multiplying it with weapon damage

- you sum all off-armor Enhanced Defense % (whether from skills or non-armor gear, also negative effects like from

Conviction aura) before multiplying it with base defense

etc

Well, it depends on the actual numbers too. Since the base AR (including flat AR bonuses) is multiplied by the sum of AR%, a larger AR% bonus can make a really big difference, of course.
+20% is certainly not a lot in the grand scheme of things (due to being summed with all the bonuses from skills, which often grants hundreds of AR%), but there are items with much larger AR% bonuses built-in;
- Insight has 180-250% bonus to Attack Rating (works in bows too in D2R)
- Faith has 300% bonus to Attack Rating
(there's also some uniques with fairly significant AR% bonuses)
