This is an entirely unimportant question but is there a standard rule of thumb for the order in which sockets are filled? I.e. left to right, top to bottom, etc.? Or is it item specific? E.g. 5os GMBs always follow Pattern A, 5os PB follow Pattern B.

I won't dare claim that this will always be true but at least for the cases where I happened to check (not actively but building after planning and noticing it), the maxroll d2planner actually filled sockets in the correct in-game order, hence offering a way to check beforehand.
If you really want to be sure..do a couple quick countess runs and fill with random runes + Hel back to empty before blowing your ordered shiny gems.

Are you going to socket my fire facet? ^^
Yes!
In a 5os Matriarchal Bow for my fire bowa. I'm not willing to drop 5x Ber for 5x perfect ones yet, so I'm specifically collecting -5/+4s at Ist/Gul price. Now I want to make sure the Pattern of colours looks good because again, not waiting around for 5 red ones, though I know some people would.
If anyone else is interested, Maxroll did indeed show the correct sequence: for a 5os bow, this is middle, top left, bottom right, bottom left, top right.
