I’d never even heard of the item
Torch of Iro
before. Yet I’d heard of the rarest item of them all of course
Tyrael's Might
. Made me start thinking…

What you guys think are the rarest items in the game ranked 1-10?

If someone worked out a list of the actual top ten items statistically that would be cool to know.

As a side note has anyone here completed a Holy Grail before? What items took you forever to find?

Statistically speaking, rarity depends on what's dropping the items. Since Hell Baal (and Nihlathak) can drop from any TC, I looked up a list of his rarest items:
  • #1 Tyrael's Might
  • #2 Death's Web
  • #3 Mang Song's Lesson
  • #4 Astreon's Iron ward
  • #5 Darkforce Spawn
  • #6 The Cranium Basher
  • #7 Earth Shifter
  • #8 Death's Fathom
  • #9 Templar's Might
  • #10 Steelrend
There are several uniques omitted to keep the list restricted to ten items.

This post was marked as the best answer.

Wow, yea never knew
Torch of Iro
existed either! I've only ever remember finding 3 of those top 10 mentioned being -
Death's Web
, Cranium and
Steelrend
!

I'll agree to that list lol..

Funny, I thought for sure that
Azurewrath
would be on that list.

I figure it wasn't included because
Azurewrath
is only TC 75, which means it can easily be farmed from Hell Meph. Obviously,
Baal
has the "better" chance to drop it, but his plethora of possible drops muddies the waters for
Azurewrath
.

If I made a list of rarity for the Pit, then
Azurewrath
would certainly be on there.

It is going to be fun hunting for these !

I finished the "Holy Grail" as it was coined several years ago, and the rarest item for me to find excluding runes was Shadow Dancers. I actually found
Tyrael's Might
twice, as well as completing 3 Breath of the Dyings. 3
Zod
runes before Shadow Dancers... just yikes. Lol.

I agree with that list almost entirely except for those bastard ebony shitkickers :P.

Shadow Dancer
actually sits at #10 alongside
Steelrend
(
Griffon's Eye
and
Crown of Ages
are there too), so it pretty much is part of the list.

Like the list and a good one at that. Few thoughts:

I'm not sure
Earth Shifter
belongs on that list - statistically that is the one that always tends to roll it is Cranium Basher that based on the RnG nature of the ID event that is rarer and glad to see it present. I think Cranium needs to move up the list, I also don't see WISP,
Windforce
, Schaeffers's
Legendary Mallet
, Grandfather for immediate examples that come to mind.

IMO, rares are truly the rarest items over Uniques. I know the uniques are easier to quantify based on existing data-points and Holy Grails are based on those.

I absolutely agree - no unique (not even
Tyrael
's) can compare to the ridiculous rarity of godly rare/magic items.

As for the list, not everyone is going to agree with what belongs up there. The main issue is that it only applies to
Baal
; I mentioned above that rarity is dependent on who is dropping what. For example,
Baal
has a reasonable chance to drop
Azurewrath
, but if you're only targeting the Pit, then you can consider it insanely rare since its Qlvl prohibits it dropping from regular monsters.

Ultimately, I think speed and efficiency are important factors to consider when determining how "rare" a unique actually is rather than relying purely on what a calculator tells us.

@Khegan Totally. Giving props for the list and always a fun cordial debated topic.

The beauty of RnG...the random quick impossible find in short order is always a treat.

Your crazy. I love it. I'm not down enough for a real holy grail, but I do like collecting set items!

According to Silospen, Diablo has a slightly better chance of dropping
Azurewrath
, then
Baal
, then
Mephisto
. The Silospen calculations are supposed to consider all aspects of the drop, so this would include
Baal
having a larger loot pool, as well. In the end, what it really comes down to is who you can farm faster.

Right, this is the same point I made in a later post. I didn't bother to mention Diablo's drop chance, as farming him for a particular item (which I never think is a good idea) would be quite slow, but still nowhere near as painful to do the same with
Baal
. If I had absolutely no choice but to farm for one item I desperately needed that Meph could drop, then targeting him is the only logical choice for me despite whatever the probability.
