I just found this three socket Mage Plate from a drop, and I have always wanted a Mage Plate to make an Enigma because I hear it's the overall best armor for it, however I'm not certain if I should aim for a Mage Plate with higher defense than this one or if it is fine as it is?

Do you want after market trade value?
Or for personal use or to switch around your char list?
Mage Plate is decent for their low str vs def values.
Which leads to the next point - Defence.
Unless you are min maxing a char spec for def..it doesn't matter for certain builds. I for one do not care about defence. (e.g block chance > defence , a range char like furyzon / FAzon clears most screens before even allowing yourself to get hit.)
A Breast PlateEnigma is an option because u do not need to sink any points into STR as u progress into the 90's.
I have thought to use it on multiple characters, but only have paladins, necros, druids, and a sorc so far, I might even make the remaining classes at some point. It's really only one of my paladins which relies on block chance and the rest of my characters are casters.

I use a perf def (only because i found one) BP for my Enigma. Been using that to share around way back in Sseason 0..
Superior items come with stupid repair costs.
By L90 you would have +67 added. With a 20 attri anni and any similar stat torch that's +40. That's +107 str off the bat excluding other str enhancing stuff found on charms, rings, war travs..etc.

Are you on ladder or Non-ladder?
Non-ladder, I've never really been interested in ladder.
Do keep in mind that Enigma's def bonus is a straight +def roll and not %ed as it is on many other armors.
As a result, your "lack of def in the base" isn't multiplied out by that and remains comparatively less impactful.
Additionally, if you really care about def, you're not settling for a Mage Plate, you're going for an elite base.
Realistically, a few points of def won't make any noticeable difference in your gameplay and you're good to go with any base you find, so long as the armor type itself is correct (weight, reqs, ..).
That said, if you're at all worried about it, just get a better one either way (assuming you're online and can hence trade for it). While a perfect roll still seems to be around Ohm to Lo (2 for sale here right now), you also have 1 off perfect up for an Ist, or high 250s for a handful of gems/Pul range, all of which is basically nothing compared to the Enigma runes you're putting in.
