so i know RNG is a huge part of D2 but i was thinking itd be cool if there was a pity timer for rune drops. lots of games now a days have pity timers for rare/elite items. Itd be cool after a certain amount of kills you would be guaranteed a rune of x level or higher. i just think it kinda sucks to grind for very long periods of time and get nothing for it. at least with some kind of pity timer you know your efforts wouldn't be a waist. Would this be something others would like or would that ruin the Spirit of the game and diminish the awesomeness that comes with a high rune drop?

Maybe somebody can like that "timer", but it is pretty useless... anyone studying probability and statistics can tell you why...
Lot of people saying "I don't see any high rune drop" just don't pay attenction to what drops off kills... I found a GC +1 traps +31 life sold for 1
Ohm
(from a chest), Superior
Archon Plate
+13%ed sold for 2
Ist
(from a random hell cow) ...just a couple of examples

I don't like the pity timer idea either. Concur that it cheapens the power of the high runes. It is also that creep of taking away the thrill of the hunt and handing out gear like candy, similar to that other Diablo title.

Also concur that while high runes are rare, the intent is to pay attention to the gear DOES drop and trade for those runes. Assuming the economy is working as it should (big assumption as of late I am afraid).

Finally, we are all chasing the
Ber
,
Jah
, and
Lo
runes, but in the meantime, we are doing it with gear that is suited for the purpose and allows for one to play and enjoy the game. It is not like we need certain gear to do certain raids to experience certain content. 5 Acts, (plus cows, ubers, and Clone D), that's all. Welcome back to 2001, with snazzier graphics!

You already have an indirect pitty timer through the fact that you can cube all the way up to
Zod
. That wasn't always the case...back in the day, you actually had to find your target runes, rather than "get any random runes that eventually add up to them". Not to mention trading was a massive pain compared to here and now, making things even harder.

The gearing experience you have today is nothing compared to the level of time and effort it took in the good old days. Gamers today are merely too used to having everything handed to them on a silver platter within 5 minutes of their first login.

Well, let's not lean too heavy on the "one can cube up to a
Zod
" argument. The Maths to go from an
Ist
to a
Ber
is quite ugly, even when it just takes 2 runes to cube beyond
Pul
.

But yeah, back in the day, when we had to play the game quietly lest we wake up one of the nearby dinosaurs, one had to find any rune above
Thul
or
Sol
or something. There was also no respec option, so if you clicked the wrong skill, TOUGH! Enjoy your wasted skill point. There also wasn't the plethora of community gathering spots to facilitate trading, nor the super convenient resources to help with gearing and leveling decisions.

But, I think those resources are a drawback at times, since they make it difficult to trade ("well, The Internets said this was worth an
Ohm
, so I am not taking anything else or other than that!") as well as filling everyone with this notion that one needs the build using 3
Jah
runes to kill & survive in Hell. I've yet to see a "guide" that gives realistic and affordable gearing options. They take the lazy way out and just put the absolute BiS with no consideration that maybe, just MAYBE Bers don't Rain from the sky for some, so CoH and Infinity are slightly out of reach.

Back in the day was arguably easier because of massively duped SOJs. There are
Charsi
food nowadays that were going for SOJ 20 years ago

If you were guaranteed a high rune, yes, that would completely diminish the game.

I just thank God that Blizzard hasn't introduced in game purchases with real world money.

Pity timer? no such thing in D2R. One
Zod
rune is 4096
Pul
runes; that's not a timer (at least not in the timeframe of human lifetimes).

This is a HARDCORE trade. PC only.

@geo89 it is a pity timer... just not one that you like. And yeah @Banjo there already is a pity timer. Someone did the maths. Assume worst case hell countess always drops
El
rune. I think it was about 4*(10^9) to get up to
Zod
 maybe you do not like the one in 4 billion pity timer but it's there :P But seriously now. No, I do not think that a pity timer would be anything healthy for the game, not unless it's something like 10k mob kills and it gives you
Hel
+ But then again... chances if you do kill 10k mobs are you'll get your
Hel
way before that. Pity timer on the HRs would just make them... items not the rare godlike object that they currently are and I like that aspect of the game. Sure, if a bunch more late-game content is added that requires you to have HRs in your gear then ok, maybe it makes sense but, frankly, I do not see that happening, at least not in the near future

Technically correct, but is a timer that never ends actually a timer?

I read that thread (and commented on it), the math is easy...

It was how many
El
runes would it take to get a
Zod
.

Here's the solution:

3^20 for
El
to
Pul

2^12 for
Pul
to
Zod

3^20 * 2^12 = 14281868906496

This is a HARDCORE trade. PC only.

lol the person that did the math was me. and ok your point is fair im not calling for this or demanding it or anything. not even saying it would be good for the game. There is precedence for it in other games. even Blizzard games. hearthstone has a pity time on legendary cards that i believe is something like forty packs will guarantee a legendary card.

I think the game is fine as is. A pity timer might be OK for single player but I agree with the above posts that hunting other things then trading for the runes you need for your runewords you want is the way to go.

This is a HARDCORE trade. PC only.
