Description
Temporarily Stun your enemy by bashing it with your shield.
Always Hits.
Smite always hits a target in range, so Attack Rating does not matter when using this skill.
Smite does not work with Life/Mana Steal.
Smite is a weapon skill and thus is affected by Attack Speed (e.g. ' Fanaticism') and is not affected by Cast Rate (e.g. -of the Apprentice). Smite works with any "X% Chance to cast level Y (spell) upon striking" ability on your weapon.
Smite does not receive added damage vs. undead with the Sanctuary Aura.
The Fire/Cold/Lightning damage added to attacks with the Holy Fire, Holy Freeze, and Holy Shock auras do not add onto Smite damage.
Smite can steal life with Life Tap cursed on target.
Smite can also deal crushing blow and open wounds damage, but not deadly strike and elemental damages.
Using Smite will reduce the durability of your weapon not shield.

Lore
The sword of a Paladin represents the might of righteousness and his shield symbolizes the strength of his faith. Both are tools he uses to mete out justice.
Just as righteousness can give his spirit the fortitude to overcome the attacks of the unjust, so too can faith be a weapon to strike back at those who work to defeat him.
To this end, the Paladin has developed several combat techniques that use the shield not only for defense, but also as an offensive weapon.
Can be used to make Runewords:

The following things Works with Smite
- Bonus damage from strength (each point of strength adds 1% Enhanced Damage).
- + Skills (increase damage a great deal).
- Crushing Blow (including Crushing Blow on the weapon; e.g. Black runeword).
- Weapon range.
- Weapon speed (see below).
- Life Tap (charges can be found on wands and daggers, save this for tough spots).
- Freezes Target (including from the weapon; e.g. Sureshrill Frost).
- Hit Blinds Target (From all gear, including the weapon and the shield).
- Slow (including from the weapon; e.g. Pompeii's Wrath).
- % Chance to cast (including from the weapon).
- Prevent Monster Heal.
- Open Wounds. NOTE: Open Wounds does not work when a monster is at full health. This means that, if you are Smiting an undamaged Physical Immune, Open Wounds won’t take effect and you cannot rely on this method to kill a Physical Immune (of course, you could use a weapon like Crescent Moon which has a chance to cast Static Field).
- Enhanced Damage which is off-weapon.
- The following items increase the shield damage: The Redeemer, Astreon's Iron Ward, Stone Crusher, Grief runeword.
- Damage +X, which is the attribute that the above items have, is added directly to the shield damage just like the Holy Shield bonus. This means that any % Enhanced Damage bonuses which work with Smite will apply (e.g. Fanaticism).
The following things do not work with Smite
- Leech (life/mana).
- Deadly Strike/ Critical Strike.
- Knockback (apart from the standard Knockback on the skill).
- Elemental damage from equipment or charms.
- Elemental damage from auras (e.g. Holy Shock) (the area effect will still work, just not the applied damage).
- Magic damage from Sanctuary Aura (the area effect will still work, just not the applied damage).
- Gear and charms that add a set amount of damage. except for those items which have the Damage +X attribute (e.g. War Traveler will not add damage to Smite except for the strength bonus).
- Enhanced Damage on the weapon.
- Enhanced Damage to Demons (e.g. Laying of Hands).
- Enhanced Damage to Undead.
Smite speed is dependent on
- Base weapon speed.
- % Effective Increased Attack Speed (EIAS) from Fanaticism.
- Increased Attack Speed (IAS) in gear.
- 6 frame Smite is the fastest possible.
Smiter Paladin Guide
